ASUS unveils new ZenFone 3 smartphone line -- here is everything you need to know

Complete ZenFone 3 Family

If you are looking for a smartphone that offers great value for money, the ZenFone family includes some of the nicest Android handsets that you can get today. The devices are attractively priced and offer specs that can appeal to just about anyone shopping in their segment. However, a lot has happened since the introduction of the second generation, so now it is time for ASUS to take the wraps off the ZenFone 3 line.

ASUS has chosen Computex 2016 to unveil three new ZenFone 3 devices: the ZenFone 3, which is the base model featuring mid-range specs, the ZenFone 3 Deluxe, the flagship in the family, and the ZenFone 3 Ultra, a massive phablet which borrows features from the other two handsets.

Let's start with the ZenFone 3, which is going to give lots of mid-rangers a run for their money. The device (featured in the center in the photo above) features a 5.5-inch Super IPS+ display with a resolution of 1,080 by 1,920 and maximum brightness of 500 nits. ASUS says that it has a screen-to-body ratio of 77.3 percent, thanks to narrow bezels. On the front and back there is 2.5D Corning Gorilla Glass.

Powering the smartphone is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625, which is an octa-core processor, with up to 4GB of RAM. The chip has an integrated X9 LTE modem and Wi-Fi 802.11ac with MU-MIMO technology, which translate into very fast download and upload speeds on both cellular and wireless networks.

The ZenFone 3 packs a 16 MP camera on the back with what ASUS calls second-generation laser, phase detection and continuous autofocus. It is claimed to produce "sharp images in any condition", and focus in as low as 0.03 seconds, which is impressive for a device in this segment.

And if that is not enough, ASUS has also placed a fingerprint sensor on the back of the device, a position now favored by many other smartphone vendors. There are capacitive buttons on the front of the device.

ZenFone 3 Dluxe frontThe ZenFone 3 Deluxe (shown to the left in the image above) is even more impressive still. It packs a 5.7-inch Super AMOLED display with a gamut that exceeds the NTSC color space, and is powered by an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor with a whopping 6GB of RAM. That is a lot of memory for a phone, but it should translate into great multitasking performance.

The smartphone features a 23 MP camera on the back, which uses a Sony IMX318 sensor, f/2.0 lens and four-axis optical image stabilization. It has the same autofocus technology as the ZenFone 3, and it adds 4K video recording to the mix.

As you might expect, it also has a fingerprint sensor, again positioned on the back of the device, but also Quick Charge 3.0 technology, courtesy of the Qualcomm-made chip, USB Type-C port on the bottom, and a powerful speaker and amp that promises great audio performance.

The smartphone features a aluminum unibody design, and no "unsightly antenna lines" on the back. It comes it at just 4.2 mm thick at the edge.

ASUS ZenFone 3 Ultra

However, it is the ZenFone 3 Ultra which will make your jaw drop. In the second paragraph I said that it is a massive phablet because this smartphone comes with a 6.8-inch display. Yes, there is no mistake there, that is a 6.8-inch panel. The resolution is 1,080 by 1,920, which is not as impressive as the diagonal, but it should do fine considering what this device will be used for -- enjoying multimedia content. The panel has a 95 percent NTSC color gamut and inside there is a 4K UHD TV-grade image processor. It has two "powerful" speakers and a "smart" amp, that are also promised to offer great audio quality. In fact, ZenFone 3 Ultra is said to be the world's first smartphone with virtual 7.1 channel surround sound thanks to DTS Headphone:X.

The rear-facing camera on the ZenFone 3 Ultra is the same as on the ZenFone 3 Deluxe, but the processor is not as ASUS has opted for a Snapdragon 652 coupled with up to 4GB of RAM. The device is powered by a 4,600 mAh battery and features Quick Charge 3.0 technology, and there is an interesting added bonus -- it can serve as a power bank for other devices.

Because it is such a big device, the fingerprint sensor is now embedded in the home button below the screen instead of being placed on the back of the device as is the case with its smaller siblings.

ASUS has not talked much about the software, but I assume that all smartphones will ship with Android 6.0 Marshmallow out of the box. There is no word on availability yet, but here are the official prices.

The ZenFone 3 kicks off at $249 for the base model, which gives you 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage. The ZenFone 3 Deluxe flagship kicks off at $499 for the version with 64GB of internal storage; there will also be a 128GB model. And, finally, the ZenFone 3 Ultra will cost $479; for the price you get 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage.

Current Flagship Smartphones Won't Be 'Daydream Ready,' Google Says

Google's VR chief Clay Bavor has disclosed that the current crop of Android-powered flagship smartphones will not be "Daydream ready." For those who want to take advantage of the mobile VR platform, it would be wise to hold off for a few months before getting a new handset.  ( Justin Sullivan | Getty Images )

If you've been all excited about Daydream — the new mobile VR platform from Google — and are looking forward to getting your hands on with it on your latest Android-powered flagship smartphone, then you're in for some bad news. The current crop of flagship smartphones will not be "Daydream ready."

The news comes straight from the horse's mouth, Google's VR chief Clay Bavor, who revealed to publication RoadToVR that for the platform to work, consumers will possibly have to purchase a new handset. It doesn't matter if you have a top-notch handset that is feature-rich. Daydream will not be compatible with existing Android smartphones.

"I can tell you that there will most likely not be any retroactively Daydream-ready phones. We want to hold a very high quality bar, and for that to happen all the components need to be just right. So, to VR fans, I would say, hold off for a few months to get your next phone ... and get a Daydream-ready phone," says Bavor.

So why will the current crop of flagship smartphones not be compatible with the ambitious VR standard from Google or be "Daydream ready," you ask? Because as Google revealed previously, there are several requirements for a smartphone to meet the standard. For starters, the device needs to have a low-persistence display, several high-quality and low-latency sensors, as well as an SoC that offers high-end performance.

Moreover, the smartphone should be running on the Android N OS so that the VR Mode needed for Daydream to work can be enabled.

One may argue that most recent flagships would meet the bar when it comes to chipset and display requirements. However, a possibility exists that the built-in sensors are not up to the mark as per Google's requirements.

Presently, Google only lists the Nexus 6P as being supported for Daydream — that too for developers. Interestingly, Bavor did not clarify whether the handset would be Daydream ready upon the mobile VR platform's official release.

ZTE, however, may be a few steps ahead of the game, as it recently announced that its ZTE Axon 7 will be Daydream ready.

Motorola Promises To 'Transform Mobile, Again' On June 9 With 'Snapping' Moto Z

Motorola is expected to unveil the Moto Z Play and Moto Z Style on June 9. The company posted a video on Twitter teasing its modular capabilities.  ( Moto US | Twitter )

Motorola is about to launch new flagship smartphones that promises to "transform mobile, again." The company posted a short teaser on Twitter promoting its June 9 Moto Z event.

It appears as if 2016 is turning into the year of the modular smartphone. In January, rumors began circulating that LG was planning to make its new G5 smartphone stand out from those of its rivals by what was described at the time as "a first-of-its-kind modular design."

LG delivered its promise and unveiled the LG G5 at Mobile World Congress in February alongside hardware accessories like an extra battery, digital camera add-on, and Hi-Fi B&O audio player that attaches to the smartphone through a special connector. The LG G5 features a metal case that is modular, allowing the bottom of the handset to slide out and be replaced with the supported accessories.

Apple is also expected to make its upcoming iPhone 7 Plus/Pro modular in a sense by including its Smart Connector port and technology on the smartphone. The feature is currently only offered on the iPad Pro and allows the tablet to seamlessly connect to supported accessories, including keyboards and wireless chargers.

Motorola is now strongly hinting that its new 2016 flagship Moto Z smartphones will include a similar feature that will allow accessories to "snap" into the handsets. The company posted a teaser video on Twitter with the message, "From brick, to flip, to snap. Snapping is the new flipping. Watch Moto transform mobile, again, June 9."

The video shows several of the company's iconic mobile devices, including the Motorola StarTAC, followed by the RAZR flip phone, and a selection of its Android smartphones.

Leaked images of the Moto Z show the smartphone has a new port on the lower rear of its case, just like the iPhone 7 Plus/Pro's Smart Connector location. Motorola is reportedly planning to call its "snap-on" accessories Amps or MotoMods.

We'll know the full details on how Motorola plans to transform mobile again and if its new strategy helps the former mobile king regain some credibility on June 9.

Leaked Photos Reveal Details About Upcoming Motorola Droid and MotoMod Accessory

Leaked Photos Reveal Details About Upcoming Motorola Droid and MotoMod Accessory

Lenovo's Moto Z flagship Android smartphone has been stirring a lot of buzz lately and now some new information about it has leaked online.

American blogger, editor, and phone leaker, Evan Blass, did what he does best; he leaked the pictures of the three Moto Mods yesterday, ahead of the Twitter release.

As far as the Moto Z Style is concerned, the device is rumored to have specs that include a 5.5-inch HD display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 SoC and a potential 16 MP main camera.

When LG launched the G5, many were impressed with the company's bold decision to incorporate modules to the main smartphone.

US forces on ground in Syria aiding key anti-IS fightThe SDF has also received air support from the US-led air coalition bombing the jihadists in Iraq and Syria. It said the meeting between Votel and the rebels came just days after a meeting between the Brett H.

The new Moto Z devices will probably start around $400. Similar to how the Moto G4 attempts to create its own legacy by diverting a little from the earlier Moto phones, the Moto Z is likely to be little different from the Moto X.

Even though the promotional images are not surprising, the features and design of the Moto Z Play and Moto Z Style have largely remained under wraps.

Lenovo's Moto X is reportedly getting a new name as the flagship phone, the specs of which reportedly bring it to the company's G line, is expected to be unveiled during the 2016 Tech World Show on June 9.

As well as the possible modules Blass also tweeted an image that appears to show the Verizon Droid edition of the phone in black, silver and gold. These will apparently be called MotoMods and be bought separately as the user sees fit. However, leaks have hinted that they will come with modules with sixteen pins that can be snapped onto the rear of these devices. The middle MotoMod is a powerful premium JBL speaker module with a built-in kickstand of some sort. It comes with a camera grip, a shutter button, a flash bulb and an optical zoom lens. Lenovo TechWorld kicks off on June 9th, and we'll have all the details as they become available.

HTC unveils Rs.52990 flagship smartphone in India

While the HTC 10 has been priced a little higher than anticipated at Rs 52,990, the HTC One X9 will be available for Rs 25,990; nearly half the price of the HTC 10.

HTC 10 Lifestyle version will also be launched in India along with HTC 10 but its price will be announced later.

Siddiqui says the six phones that HTC launched on Thursday are at different price points and cater to different segments. After several rumors and leaks, the One X9 was officially launched in China in December a year ago and now, nearly after five months after making it available in China, HTC has finally launched it in the Indian market. The display corners with gorilla glass on a curved edge with Qualcomm Snapdragon 820, Quad Core 2.2GHz.

On the camera front, HTC has integrated a 12 MP Ultrapixel camera on the rear of the device, while the front camera comes as 5MP autofocus lens. It comes with 32GB on-board storage which can be expanded up to 2TB using MicroSD card.

Hoping to better the mild response in India to their last flagship smartphone, HTC, the Taiwan based phone manufacturer, unveiled their latest flagship smartphone, the HTC 10 in New Delhi today.

The HTC 10 Lifestyle, Desire 630, and Desire 830 prices have not been revealed as of now.

The HTC One X9 runs on a MediaTek Helio X10 system on chip and features a 5.5 inches wide full HD/1080p display. In terms of connectivity, it has Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac (2.4 & 5 GHz) support for Chromecast, AirPlay, and Miracast. At the beginning of this decade, HTC was a dominant force in the global smartphone arena with over 20 percent market share. Apart from the company's official store, it seems that the Indians will be able to buy the device from retailer Mahesh Telecom as well. For optics the device is loaded with a 13MP rear camera and a 5MP selfie camera.

The Desire 825 sports a 5.5-inch HD display along with a Snapdragon 400 processor, paired with 2GB RAM.

ZTE's new flagship has a metal frame and full support for VR

The phone was announced yesterday. The AXON 7 is the successor to the AXON. ZTE's convoluted naming strategy has resulted in it being called the "7" though. The company released so many variants of the AXON that the new device is really the seventh in line. As designs go, the AXON 7 is far from unique. The all-metal body with dual front-firing speaker grilles could easily be mistaken for the HTC One M8 from afar. It features rounded corners and a matte finish and is available in either gold or grey. The 5.5-inch AMOLED 1440p display is powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 820, the latest in flagship smartphone processors. Two storage levels are available, 64GB with 4GB of RAM or 128GB of storage and 6GB of RAM. The rear camera has a 20-megapixel sensor and the front selfie-shooter is 8-megapixels. Other notable hardware includes a futureproofed USB Type-C port for charging, a fingerprint reader, a large 3,250mAh battery capable of charging to 100 percent in 100 minutes and a dual-speaker sound system that is able to emulate surround sound using stereo effects. ZTE said the AXON 7 has been designed "especially for music and audio lovers." It has consulted experts in the field and established a dedicated sound design lab to create what it claims is an exceptional smartphone audio experience. The speaker setup has been endorsed by popular Chinese pianist Lang Lang. "Not only does the AXON 7 mirror Lang Lang's urban and sophisticated style, we've also designed the smartphone especially for music and audio lovers," said Adam Zeng, CEO of ZTE Mobile Devices. "We've consulted music professors, and set up a dedicated sound design lab to achieve the best sound possible. We're confident that the AXON 7 will become the smartphone of choice for business as well as ordinary people that appreciate exceptional sound quality anywhere, anytime with our AXON 7." The camera has also been tuned extensively to take photos reminiscent of an SLR. It features dual image stabilisation, advanced auto focus, exposure and scene detection technology and optimised noise reduction algorithms. The AXON 7 will launch with Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow preinstalled. It will receive an upgrade to Android N shortly after the new operating system's launch though, including support for one of the key features of the new release. ZTE has developed its own virtual reality headset to take advantage of the Daydream VR feature coming to Android in version N. Details on ZTE VR are currently scant but the company said it is designing the headset to "complement" the Axon 7's hardware. The AXON 7's exact pricing and availability have yet to be announced. ZTE has said it will cost less than $500 and will be available in the U.S. Retailers will include Amazon, Best Buy, B&H and Newegg, each supplying a free two-year warranty. The handset will also be available in Europe and additional regions worldwide.

Another year, another comic book themed Samsung Galaxy flagship smartphone

Samsung is working on a new collaboration with a popular comic book franchise.

Last year, the South Korean technology firm teamed up with Marvel to celebrate the launch of Avengers: Age of Ultron with a stylish special edition Iron Man-themed Galaxy S6 Edge.

The smartphone was branded with a gold drawing of the Iron Man helmet, and there was a gold ring around the 16-megapixel rear camera.

A limited edition wireless charging dock designed to look like the Arc Reactor designed by Tony Stark in the Marvel film series comes bundled with the flagship smartphone.

And now Samsung has teased how it plans to follow-up the Iron Man smartphone.

The news comes as Alphabet Inc Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt said the Samsung Galaxy S7 was better than the iPhone 6S.

Mr Schmidt, who served as Google CEO from 2001 until January 2011, admitted to being an iPhone 6S user – as well as owning a Galaxy S7.

The US software engineer said he thought the Galaxy S7 was an overall better device, with battery life being one of the main reasons.

Two New ASUS ZenPad Launched with Mid-range Specs

ASUS is about to release its newest flagship smartphone, the ZenFone 3. We've seen plenty of leaks regarding the device including its main specs. Also, the smartphone has been confirmed for launch on may 30th. While we are waiting for the ZenFone 3 to be officially released, we have another ASUS related report. It seems that the company's ZenPad tablet lineup will be receiving two more additions. ASUS is about to introduce two new ZenPad devices that will have an 8-inch display, and a 10-inch one, respectively.

Both tablets will be running Android 6.0 Marshmallow out of the box, which will be customized with the company's new ZenUI user interface, that will bring the manufacture's proprietary functions. The tablets are called ASUS ZenPad 8 (Z380M) and ASUS ZenPad (Z300M) and both of them will underpinned by a MediaTek MT8163 quad-core CPU. We've already mentioned the size of their display, but we also have to say that both will have a pixel resolution 1280 x 800. Other features that are included on both devices are WiFi 802.11a/b/g/n support, GPS, microSD card lost in case you need to expand the internal storage, etc.

Even though they are not that great, the tablets have two available cameras, one placed on the back side with a 5 MP sensor, while the other is located up front and has a 2 MP sensor. When they will become available for purchase the will be sold in three different color options, namely gray, pearl white, and rose gold.

There are some differences between the two tablets. First of all, the ZenPad 8 is the low-budget one, which features a single front-mounted speaker, has a promised battery life of eight hours, and will be available in two variants depending on the amount of storage space and RAM. The first model will come with 1 GB of RAM and 8 GB of native storage, while the second model will include 2 GB of RAM and 16 GG ob on-board storage. The bigger tablet, the ASUS ZenPad 10 will most likely have an eleven hour battery life, and unlike the 8-inch tablet, it will come with two speakers place on the front which will provide stereo sound. As in the case of the Zenpad 8, the ZenPad 10 will also be available in two versions, namely 16 GB and 32 GB. The only difference is that the ZenPad 10 will have 2 GB of RAM no matter the model. The tablet will come with an accessory called the ASUS Mobile Dock, which is basically a Bluetooth keyboard that can be very helpful when typing longer texts. You mig ht probably wonder of the keyboard will be included in the package or will it be sold separately. Unfortunately, this information is unknown yet.

When it comes to pricing, ASUS will be selling the ZenPad 10 in exchange for $233, while if you are interested in the ZenPad 8 you will have to pay a price of $178. In case you need more storage space, ASUS will provide you with 5GB of WebStorage and 100 GB of Google Drive Space available two years. Unfortunately, the availability details gave not been revealed yet.

ASUS has made a name for itself when it comes to Android Tablets. The manufacturer has other tablet families apart from this one, like the MeMo Pad and the Transformer PAD. Plus, the company has manufacturer the Google branded Nexus 7.

We will get back to you as soon as we find out the release date of the two new tablets.

How Will Apple and Samsung Weather the Coming Smartphone Market Fallout?

If you thought slowing smartphone sales had hurt tech earnings so far this year, to quote the '70s rock outfit Bachman-Turner Overdrive , "you ain't seen nothing yet."

The gradual maturing of the global smartphone market, evidenced by its first-ever period of effectively flat growth in the first quarter,  has arguably been the most important tech industry story so far in 2016.

And if recent signals are to be believed, smartphone powers like Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL), Samsung (NASDAQOTH:SSNLF), Xiaomi, and others could be experiencing a rough second quarter.

From bad to worse?

One way the analyst community attempts to gauge the forthcoming financial performance of handset makers is by analyzing the companies that supply their components and build their devices.

As the thinking goes, the earnings results and guidance from the smartphone supply chain can serve as a leading indicator about the level of demand names like Apple and Samsung see for their devices. Unfortunately, if recent reports are to be believed, investors should be very concerned indeed.

During their Q1 earnings reports, an alarmingly large number of smartphone supply chain companies signaled their businesses are experiencing smartphone-related weakness in some way shape or form. Among them:

  • Japan Display switched its 2016 profit forecast to a loss and scrapped its previously announced plans to initiate a dividend.
  • Sharp's CEO stated orders from large smartphone OEMs decelerated noticeably in Q4 2015.
  • Smartphone assembler Pegatron saw its Q1 profits fall 35%, well short of analysts' expectations. Its April sales also sharply contracted, falling 16% year-over-year.
  • Apple assembly partner Foxconn's Q1 profits dropped by 9.2% compared to the prior year.
  • iPhone images sensor supplier Sony stated demand for its smartphone components has proven weaker than expected, though it will likely increase in the second half of the year.
  • Nidec, which supplies the haptic components that enable Apple's Force Touch, also saw Q1 profits decline by 18% on -- surprise! -- weaker than expected demand.
  • Since component suppliers need to produce their wares ahead of the production cycle of their handset customers, slowing demand from a component supplier in one quarter can precede a similar slowdown for the larger consumer-electronics name in the next quarter.

Though certainly not fault-proof, such a sweeping breakdown in market-wide fundamentals strongly suggests major smartphone makers like Samsung, Apple, and Xiaomi are experiencing slowing demand for their goods in the near term. As such, it seems fair to expect that the current quarter could be experiencing continued weakness in the sales of many major smartphone brands, though there can certainly be exceptions to any trend -- like Samsung's strong Q1, for example. The more important question for investors is, how long will this trend last?

    Better days ahead?

While the smartphone market's best days of growth almost assuredly lie behind  it, the second half of this year will also likely prove better than the first for Apple and Samsung, though to varying degrees.

    Iphone

    Source: Apple

Apple's bull thesis is undoubtedly more clear-cut here. As we all know, the iPhone 7's form factor upgrade should help drive a holiday-season upgrade cycle. This is assuming the iPhone 7 maintains Apple's long-standing design leadership. (Likely, but not a given.) Past iPhone form factor updates enjoyed an appreciable tailwind thanks to market-wide growth, each of the past three iPhone upgrade cycles has been accompanied by sales and stock price increases for the Mac maker.

Unlike Apple, Samsung has already refreshed its flagship handsets this year, and thankfully, the devices appear to be winners in their own rights. Lauded by reviewers and selling well so far this year, the Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge are some of Samsung's best high-end smartphones in recent memory.  As such, it also follows that Samsung stands to benefit among Android handset OEMs going into the all-important holiday season for consumer electronics purchases.

The halcyon days of unfettered smartphone market growth will likely never return.  However, the companies that stand the best chance of competing for market share within a mature market are likely those offering the best devices. So while the news around the smartphone market has been quite grizzly so far this year, the second half of the year will likely prove better, a fact investors would do well to note.

Microsoft updates hardware requirements for PC and Mobile

As Samsung and Apple continue to sell their flagship smartphones in tens of millions each quarter, the Windows-maker only shipped close to 2.4 million units. The cross that once closed the pop-up, now gives the permission to upgrade. This question is stumping marketing execs and customer service folks at the company.

According to a Sunday report from MSPowerUser.com, a quiet change has been made by Microsoft to the screen-size specifications for devices running the company's Windows 10 Mobile operating system. If the user didn't respond to the message within an hour (for example if they were away from their computer) the upgrade was scheduled. Don't get us wrong, the new OS is shiny and has all bells and whistles, but not everyone wants to jump aboard. Tablet users, however, typically can't upgrade as the RAM is soldered to the motherboard.

Windows 10 Chan: Do you want to upgrade to Windows 10?

The change occurred as Microsoft have now labelled the update as "recommended" and most users PCs are programmed to accept this type of update for security purposes. "They'll thank us later".

Wish Windows 10 was better in some way? No doubt this has caused confusion to users as many, for decades, have equated clicking the "X" to mean no or to cancel. It still does the intended job by closing the annoying pop-up.

User: No! Stop with these meaningless choices! That's clever. Microsoft has even confirmed the move on its support page. A keen analysis of videos showing what transpired during the company's Build 2016 conference shows that UWP dominated pretty much the entire presentation the company had prepared for the attendees. Instead of cancelling the update, the button now schedule the same for later. It is bound to creep up another time when users least expect it to. Also, activating the aforementioned setting allows automated opening of sites that are excluded in the Enterprise Mode Site List in Microsoft Edge.

Global smartphone sales grew 3.9 percent during the first quarter of the year, but things weren't so great for one vendor: Microsoft.

However, that offer is set to end on July 29 and with just over two months before the deadline, it seems Microsoft is stepping up its heavy handed tactics to try and get users to make the switch.

He said the latest push from Microsoft "seems purposefully created to confuse users who have been wearily slogging through the nagging for half a year now".

Sony Xperia X, XA Smartphones up for Pre-order in India

Sony Mobile surprised its fans when it announced that the Xperia Z series lineup would be discontinued and revealed the Xperia X. Now, speculations suggest that the new lineup will be Sony's flagship for at least two years and may also take over current lineups such as the Xperia C and Xperia M. The flagship smartphone might not make its way to India soon.

Both Sony Xperia X and Xperia XA run Android 6.0 Marshmallow. It has now announced that pre-registrations are open for its Xperia X and Xperia XA smartphones. The decision to pull the plug on Xperia C and Xperia M series is being attributed to the company's plans to focus on the product offerings towards the Xperia X series.

The company began taking pre-orders in the month of May for the Sony Xperia X Performance in France, Italy, the Netherlands, and Sweden. The industry follower noted that one indication that this may come true is that the rumored Xperia C6 Ultra is now expected to come out as the Xperia X Ultra.

Xperia X has a seamless metal back and its 5-inch display has curved glass edges.

The Sony Xperia XA is powered by a MediaTek MT6755 processor with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage. For Graphics it has a Mali T860 MP2 GPU. The handset also sports a 23-megapixel rear-facing camera with a Sony Exmor RS sensor, and a 13-megapixel front-facing camera to shoot selfies with.

For the camera, the more powerful model has 23MP for the rear and an impressive 13MP for the front. It also supports microSD cards of up to 200GB capacity.

Sony Xperia X sports a 5 inch Full HD (1080 x 1920 pixels) IPS Display. Sony Xperia X is powered by Snapdragon 650 chipset and features fingerprint scanner. For Graphics it has a Adreno 510 GPU. Users get 32GB internal storage with microSD expandability of up to 200GB. Xperia XA on the other hand comes with a 13MP primary camera and an 8MP selfie camera.

To halt smartphone slide, Samsung rewrites playbook

REUTERS/Kim Hong-Ji/Files - RTSCR76Thomson ReutersFile photo of a model posing for photographs with Samsung Electronics' new smartphone Galaxy S7 during its launching ceremony in Seoul

    By Se Young Lee

SEOUL (Reuters) - From the way it chooses smartphone components to the models it brings to market, Samsung Electronics has undergone a painful process of breaking from its past to reverse a slide in its handset business.

For example, the world's largest smartphone maker agonized over camera specs for its flagship Galaxy S7 until the last moment - ultimately defying industry convention by opting for fewer pixels in exchange for improved autofocus features and low-light performance, a move that contributed to early success.

It also pared back its product line-up, overcoming internal resistance, enabling it to streamline production, an executive said.

The handset business has now stabilized, and had its best profit in nearly two years in January-March, though historically low smartphone industry growth still leaves Samsung looking for the "next big thing".

"We've now gotten to a point where we can secure a baseline profit even if the market stagnates, so long as we don't make a bad mistake," said Kim Gae-youn, vice president in charge of Samsung's smartphone product planning. "I'm confident we can hold our ground."

After peaking in 2013, a sharp drop in mobile profits exposed Samsung as slow to adjust to the changing market: its budget devices were overpriced and unappealing versus Chinese offerings, and the 2014 version of its Galaxy S flopped.

That prompted a cull among executives and stoked investor worries Samsung might not be able to recover as rivals including Apple and China's Huawei Technologies [HWT.UL] and Xiaomi [XTC.UL] gained market share at its expense.

There was no sweeping, across-the-board fix. Rather, Samsung embarked two years ago on an overhaul that included a shift from a phone-for-all-needs approach towards a line-up that emphasized economies of scale.

It revamped design, using metal frames and curved screens, and gave high-end features such as organic light-emitting diode (OLED) screens to its low- and mid-tier products.

    CAMERA CONUNDRUM

As Samsung prepared to launch its Galaxy S7 phones this year, executives went back and forth over whether to use a 12-megapixel rear camera that shoots better in the dark and has improved auto focus, or stay with a 16-megapixel count. At the last moment, they opted for 12-megapixels - a rare step down in an industry fixated on higher numbers.

This meant a change in approach for a company known to tout the highest specs for its flagship products, and executives required convincing, Kim said. They were swayed by data showing consumers want more than just a high pixel count.

"In the past, based on our past decision-making process, we never would have gone back," Kim said in an interview at Samsung's headquarters campus in Suwon, south of Seoul.

The move worked. More than half of U.S. S7 buyers surveyed cited camera quality as a key selling point, compared with a third of all smartphone buyers in the first quarter, according to Kantar US Insights.

The same mindset shift gave Samsung confidence to release a Galaxy 7 series that looks similar to its predecessor. This incremental upgrade drew initial scepticism, but the S7 phones have beaten expectations and could set a new first-year sales record for the South Korean firm.

Samsung must still convince investors its recent improvement is sustainable, and that innovative products are in the works to grow revenue. Some attribute its rebound partly to Apple's weaker performance, and cost-cutting.

"I think they will try to imbue the Note (tablet) with a more transformative change such as new technology under the new leadership, than the fine-tuning we saw with the Galaxy S7," said Kim Hyun-su, a fund manager with IBK Investment & Securities, which holds Samsung shares.

Long-time mobile chief J.K. Shin ceded day-to-day management in December when Dongjin Koh became president of the handset unit in the biggest leadership change to date under the conglomerate's heir-apparent Jay Y. Lee.

Samsung's operating profit is expected to be flat this year and grow just 3 percent next year, according to 43 analysts polled by Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

    LESS IS MORE

Slimming down its product portfolio was another departure from the past, when Samsung launched variations to soak up as much demand as possible. As market growth stalled, that approach was no longer cost effective.

It phased out unpopular models and created common platforms, with more phones using the same parts. Researcher Counterpoint says Samsung has shed close to a third of its product portfolio.

That move also had to overcome internal resistance.

"If you're in the trenches, you want to have a machine gun, a grenade, a mine on hand," Kim said. "There are also different needs depending on individual markets, so regional sales staff naturally can't be happy when the company moves to rationalize and restructure from a global structure. The transition process is painful."

The product cull paid off; the revamped models helped Samsung recover in big markets such as India. "There was a feeling the sheer number of phones in the market was confusing for customers," said a Samsung India executive, declining to be identified as he was not authorized to speak with the media.

Despite a solid first quarter, analysts remain cautious about Samsung's outlook, with researcher Gartner predicting global smartphone sales growth will slow to 7 percent this year.

Samsung has also yet to recover in China, the world's top smartphone market, where it ranks sixth with 7 percent market share, according to Strategy Analytics, well behind local rivals such as Huawei, Xiaomi and OPPO.

Samsung's Kim says his focus now is on premium-end smartphones - those costing $600 and above - where not all industry players have the muscle to compete.

"There's still room for growth in the market," he said. "This segment wants innovation, which has turned it into an area that requires huge capital equipment investments."

LG Electronics India Limited (LG) has officially announced the pre bookings for its highly anticipated, world's first modular smartphone LG G5, which will be open from May 21, 2016.

Customers can pre-book the Rs 52,990 LG G5 from May 21 to May 30 on offline brand stores or online exclusively on Flipkart.

LG's first modular flagship smartphone, the LG G5 is now available for pre-booking in India. Everything you need to know about OnePlus 3, CEO says ‘feels good to hold’

    oneplus-3-design-leak-evleaks

The upcoming OnePlus flagship smartphone – OnePlus 3 – design is already out in purported press render image, and now company's CEO Pete Lau took on Chinese microblogging website Weibo teasing that the 'OP3 feels good to hold'. Previously, he had shared a camera sample of the OP3 on Weibo too.

    oneplus-3-camera-sample-pete-lau-weibo

As for now, the OnePlus 3 launch is rumoured for May 28, but there is no official word as yet and we are expecting company to send invites early next week. OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei had previously confirmed that the upcoming flagship will feature a 'new design,' and will launch by the end of Q2 2016, which also coincides with the rumored date. Having said that, OnePlus has the history of missing deadlines too, so it is possible that the OP3 launch date shifts further.

The purported press image leak earlier this week by @evleaks, suggests that OnePlus 3 will boasts of a metal unibody design. It also shows the USB Type-C port on the bottom along with the 3.5mm audio jack and speaker grill. OnePlus retains the three stage alert slider hardware toggle from the OnePlus 2, which is present on the left side. It doesn't show Laser auto focus on the back and it seems to use single LED flash. Although the camera sensor appears a little bigger to us and we are guessing that OnePlus can go Samsung way in the camera department, just like the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge.

According to one of the leak, OnePlus will come with a AMOLED display and is likely to be backed by a 3000mAh battery, which is 300mAh less compared to 3300mAh battery on the existing flagship OnePlus 2.

    OnePlus 3 rumored specifications
