Samsung Galaxy S5 Unlocked Version Gets Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow Updates!

Finally, the long wait of Samsung Galaxy S5 owners for the Android Marshmallow updates have ended when the new Google mobile OS started rolling out to unlocked version of the 2014 flagship smartphone of the Korean tech giant.

It was not surprising to say the least, since the Galaxy S5 is only two years old this month, which means the rollout of the Android Marshmallow updates is within the smartphone's prescribed age.

However, what came as a surprise to some users outside of Korea is that it is not just the Android 6.0 Marshmallow that arrived on their phone but actually the latest firmware update to the OS – the Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow, reports Mobipicker.

The Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow updates have rolled out to the Samsung Galaxy S5 unlocked versions in its home country in South Korea and critics were thinking that only the Android 6.0 Marshmallow updates will roll out internationally.

Apparently, that is not the case as the latest firmware update to the Marshmallow started coming to Galaxy S5 in the US this week as well as in other countries other than South Korea.

The rollout of the Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow to unlocked version of Galaxy S5 also confirmed that there is not going to be an official OS update to the Galaxy S4.However, owners of Galaxy S4 should be aware of the fact that there have already been a couple of Android 6.0 Marshmallow-based custom ROM that have been developed by some developers so that the 2013 flagship smartphone of the Korean tech giant could also enjoy the latest Android OS.

What it brings

The Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow updates to the Samsung Galaxy S5 came with stability improvements, bug fixes, speed improvements, and a better user experience overall, notes Slash Gear.

It also brought along the usual features of the Marshmallow including Doze, Google Now on Tap, granular app permissions, among a host of others.

In particular, the Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow updates are already coming to the Galaxy S5 unlocked version with model number SM-6900L over-the-air (OTA) so those who have yet to receive their updates should also check their settings if it already arrived and do the manual update themselves on their smartphones.

It is important for users to make sure that the battery of their Galaxy S5 are charged at least 70% when they take on the Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow updates so as to ensure hassle-free updating without any kind of interruption that can cause problems later on.

Manufacturer development phase

With the recent launching of the Samsung Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 Edge during the Samsung Unpacked event before the start of the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2016 at Barcelona, Spain late in February, the pressure was on the Korean tech giant to also roll out the Android 6.0 Marshmallow updates on its other smartphones that are less than two years old.

Last month, American carrier T-Mobile recently stated that the Marshmallow update to the Galaxy S5 shall come the way it has done so with the Galaxy S6 and the other 2015 smartphones and tablets of Samsung.

Accordingly, the Marshmallow update to the Samsung Galaxy S5 was still in manufacturer development phase then, which means that carriers, such as T-Mobile needed to do some testing first before the update is officially released to the public.

Critics also think that the fact that T-Mobile planning to release a Galaxy S5 Marshmallow update is a good sign for other Galaxy S5 users in the United States and around the world.

It can be noted that most carriers, both in the US and elsewhere, are silent about their plans on the Marshmallow update but it is most likely that the updates will be a sweeping one and shall cover those that offer the Galaxy S5.
