Sony MWC 2016 Press Conference – What to expect

What are you most excited for?

The Sony MWC 2016 press conference is right around the corner, and it's likely we'll see plenty of new tech unveiled.

The event is scheduled to take place at the Fira Gran Via in Barcelona on February 22, bright and early at 08:30 CET.

Sony is a regular attendee of the Mobile World Congress tradeshow, and has previously used the event to launch flagship smartphones.

But the company is keeping all news under wraps for now, so it's tough to say exactly what Sony has planned. That said, we've got a few ideas, including a possible Sony Xperia Z6 reveal.

Here's a round-up of what we think Sony could show off at MWC this year:

Sony Xperia Z6

The obvious – but not assured – candidate for an MWC launch is the Sony Xperia Z6.

It's been six months since the Xperia Z5 landed. That's hardly an age ago, but Sony is known for its notoriously short product release cycles.

The company has been widely rumoured to show off the Xperia Z6 at the event in February, but nothing is certain.

But if it does launch at MWC, what might it look like? It's expected that the handset will feature a pressure-sensitive display – like the iPhone 6S – and Qualcomm's new Snapdragon 820 chip.

But wait, there's more. Sony is also rumoured to unveil not one but five versions of the Sony Xperia Z6.

The entire launch roster is tipped as follows:

  • Sony Xperia Z6 Mini – 4-inch
  • Sony Xperia Z6 Compact – 4.7-inch
  • Sony Xperia Z6 – 5.2-inch
  • Sony Xperia Z6 Plus – 5.8-inch
  • Sony Xperia Z6 Ultra – 6.4-inch
  • That might sound like overkill, but Sony hasn't been afraid to release multiple variants of a single phone in the past. Take, for instance, the Sony Xperia Z5, Z5 Compact, and Z5 Premium.

Of course, having five different models could be a real headache for consumers – perhaps some of the devices will be region specific?

Unfortunately, we still don't know what Sony's plans are for certain, so take this rumour with a pinch of salt.

    Sony Xperia Z6 Tablet

Perhaps more likely than a smartphone penta-launch, we're expecting the release of the Sony Xperia Z6 Tablet.

Sony has used previous MWC events to launch the Sony Xperia Z4 Tablet and Z2 Tablet, so it stands to reason that we could see the Z6 Tablet too.

The tablet would likely ship with a similar spec sheet to the Xperia Z6 – think Snapdragon 820 chip, fingerprint scanner, etc. However, we'd think a QHD – or perhaps even 4K – display seems likely too.

    Sony Xperia C6

Sony being Sony, five smartphones simply wouldn't be enough. That's why we're not surprised at rumours of a sixth handset – the Sony Xperia C6.

The phone has been leaked extensively online, and seems a likely candidate for an MWC launch.

The Sony Xperia C6's apparent big USP is a near bezel-less display, just like last year's C5 Ultra.

It's also reported to carry an octa-core MediaTek chipset, and a 5- or 6-inch display with an 1080p resolution.

    Sony Smartwatch 4

It's been a year-and-a-half since the Sony lifted the lid on its Smartwatch 3. It's about time for an upgrade.

That's why we wouldn't be surprised to see the launch of the Smartwatch 4.

Obvious upgrades would include a better processor, battery life improvements, and a more refined design.

    PlayStation VR

We're not so sure about this one, but it's worth mentioning. While MWC is assured to feature some hot virtual reality tech, there's no telling whether Sony will shed more light on its headset.

The big names in VR – Oculus, HTC, Sony – have all been very cautious about releasing information, so it's tough to say whether a PlayStation VR MWC 2016 event will take place.

If the system is mentioned, it will likely be to offer new details on hardware, software, pricing, or release – but don't count on it.
