Sony recently unveiled its latest flagship Android smartphones, the Xperia Z5, Xperia Z5 Compact, and the Z5 Premium.
Test versions of the devices are in South Africa, and Sony Mobile let media get some hands-on time with the devices.
Of particular interest was the Sony Xperia Z5 Premium and its ridiculous 2,160×3,840 ultra high definition (UHD) screen, as well as the 23MP cameras on the back of all three Xperia Z5 models.
Sony didn't want us to take photos with the devices just yet, stating that the firmware was not final and therefore the camera performance could not be accurately rated.
However, we were able to test the phone's software, hold it, and set our eyes upon the screen in all its 4K glory.
The Sony Xperia Z5 Premium may be a large device, weighing in at 180g and measuring 154.4×76.0×7.8 mm, but it still fits in the hand comfortably and it's rounded edges are easy to grip.
I'm not sure how I feel about the reflective surface on its back, but regardless of what you think of the aesthetics, it remains functional.
It may pick up fingerprints easily, but the Z5 Premium's reflective back does not make it feel as though the phone wants to slip out of your hand.
On the software front, the Z5 Premium performed well. The interface was responsive, apps launched quickly, and switching between apps was fast.
The display was clear, even in sunlight, colours were bright, and images crisp. This is standard for a high-end phone, though, and unfortunately it wasn't possible to really put the screen through its paces in the brief time we had with it.
It certainly gave a great first impression, and it is going to be interesting to see how it stacks up in side-by-side comparisons when review samples are available.
The Sony Xperia Z5 range is set to launch in South Africa during the fourth quarter of 2015.
Key specifications of the three devices are summarised in a table below.
