HTC Announces Android 5.1 Lollipop Update for HTC One M9 Sprint Users

HTC Announces Android 5.1 Lollipop Update for HTC One M9 Sprint UsersIBTimes india

HTC launched its flagship One M9 smartphone in Mobile World Congress 2015.

Apart from One M9, the Taiwanese smartphone-maker has also launched two bigger siblings One M9+ and One E9+. All the three smartphones come powered by Android 5.0 Lollipop OS.

Out of the three, HTC decided to roll out official Android 5.1 Lollipop update for One M9. Though the smartphone is available in locked and unlocked versions across several countries, HTC decided to roll out the worthy update for Sprint owners only.

Geeky Gadgets spotted a tweet wrote by HTC VP Mo Versi, which reads as "HTC One (M9) Sprint Owners! We have received technical approval on Lollipop OS 5.1 which includes camera improvements. OTA to start on 7/1."

After receiving mixed reaction from media, HTC has not launched One M9 in every country. For instance, HTC launched One M9+, which offers a larger display like One E9+. Since all the three phones currently runs on the latest Sense interface along with same Android 5.0 Lollipop and packs almost similar specifications, its easy to speculate that HTC might launch the Android 5.1 Lollipop update later for all these phones.

Android 5.1 Lollipop update features bug fixes, patches and some new features, making it really handy to get the best out of the device.

Recently, Samsung launched Android 5.1 update for its latest flagship devices, Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge. Motorola has also announced to roll out Android 5.1 Lollipop update for Moto Turbo and a few other devices.

Xiaomi Mi 4i vs OnePlus One: How do the Chinese value-for-money high-enders compare?

China-based Xiaomi and OnePlus are two relatively new entrants into the world of smartphones. Both the brands had succeeded in capturing attention even before their respective handsets were launched.

Although the two smartphone brands are well-known for their affordable devices, both have their own set of flagship high-end smartphones, which have succeeded in capturing the fancy of buyers across the world.

These prominent high-end smartphones are the Xiaomi Mi 4 and the OnePlus One. Both these devices can be considered worthy alternatives to top-end smartphones of reputed brands. These devices also fall into the value-for-money segment.

OnePlus OneOnePlus One vs Xiaomi Mi 4i(OnePlus)

With Chinese smartphones generally considered to cater only to the budget segment, more than the flagship buyers' segment, both Xiaomi and OnePlus could break this conception in terms of offering decent tech-specs (in their flagship smartphones) and affordability at the same time.

Let's see how the flagship Xiaomi Mi 4 and the OnePlus One stack up against one another.

Xiaomi Mi 4i vs OnePlus One

Display

Xiaomi's Mi 4i features a 5in display having resolutions of 1080 x 1920, along with pixel density of approximately 441 pixels per inch (ppi). The smartphone's display is enclosed in Corning's scratch-resistant glass and not in a Corning Gorilla Glass screen protector.

On the other hand, OnePlus One incorporates a comparatively large 5.5in screen having resolutions of 1080x1920 pixels and pixel density of approximately 401 ppi. Unlike the Mi 4i, the One is protected by the Gorilla Glass 3 display protector.

Both the smartphones boast multi-touch and 16 million colours.

Comparing the display technicalities, it is clearly evident that both smartphones draw level as far as providing a decent display is concerned. The OnePlus One does not get any brownie points just because it has a bigger display than the Mi 4i.

In fact, users should observe sharper images forming on the Mi 4i's screen by virtue of the smartphone's 441 ppi pixel density which is superior in comparison to the One's 401 ppi pixel density.

Hardware

Xiaomi Mi 4i has onboard a 1.7GHZ quad-core Cortex A53 and 1.1 GHz Cortex A53 CPUs over a Qualcomm MSM8939 Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 SoC. The smartphone features 2GB RAM inside the hood.

On the other hand, OnePlus One is driven by a 2.5GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor; the smartphone also features 3GB RAM onboard.

The Mi 4i emerges as a clear winner as far as offering a decent and speedy computing user experience is concerned by virtue of a combined octa-core processor experience.

Memory

The Xiaomi Mi 4i features 2GB RAM onboard; and this in combination with either of the quad-core SoCs of the smartphone, should allow users to utilise it for a comparatively decent degree of high-end gaming.

The smartphone offers only 16GB of internal storage by default and there is no option to insert an external MicroSD card.

On the other hand, OnePlus One lets users choose between a 16GB and 64GB internal storage variant having 3GB RAM by default. One lopsided aspect here, like Xiaomi's Mi 4i is that the smartphone's internal storage area is fixed and there is no provision for expansion via external MicroSD card.

Camera

Both the Xiaomi Mi 4i and OnePlus One feature an identical 13MP rear camera that offers dual-LED flash.

For video capture, the Mi 4i offers 1080p@30fps, 480p@120fps.

In contrast, the OnePlus One's 13 MP rear camera offers 2160p@30fps, 2160p(DCI)@24fps, 1080p@60fps, 720p@120fps video recording; thus out-stepping the Mi 4i.

Like their identical rear cameras, both the Mi 4i and One offer users a 5MP front camera.

Battery

Xiaomi Mi 4i is driven by a fixed 3120 mAh Li-Ion battery that is claimed to offer users a 35-hour talktime when connected to 3G networks.

On the contrary, OnePlus One is powered by an almost identical 3100 mAh Li-Po battery that is non-removable.

Comparing the technical aspects of their batteries, both the smartphones draw level as far as offering decent battery juice is concerned.

Software

Xiaomi's Mi 4i, being a recent release, enjoys the Android 5.0.2 (Lollipop) privilege along with Xiaomi's newer MIUI 6.0 on top; whereas the OnePlus One runs CyanogenMod 11S which is built on Android 4.4.2 (KitKat). Users of the One are eligible to receive an upgrade to CyanogenMod 12 (based on Android Lollipop).

Considering the out-of-the-box software environment, Xiaomi's Mi 4 beats the OnePlus One hands-down.

For connectivity, users of both handsets get LTE, HSPA, Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi 2.0 and microUSB.

Release date and price

Xiaomi's global smartphone, the Mi 4i is currently available for purchase (through official channels) in India where the handset costs Rs 13,000 (£135, $204). Prospective buyers in other countries can procure a Mi 4i (16GB variant) through third-party e-tailers for $234 (£149).

The OnePlus One being an older release is available for purchase (now without invites) worldwide for £225 ($353, Rs 22,560).

Going by their technical analysis, both the Xiaomi Mi 4i and OnePlus One draw level in most of the technical aspects; but buyers can accord the benefit of doubt to Xiaomi's Mi 4i if a feature-filled value-for-money device is what they are looking for, rather than a simple high-end smartphone.

Incremental Update Fixes OnePlus One Issues on Touchscreen Sensitivity and Bluetooth Connectivity

Although it has an upcoming new flagship smartphone expected to be released in the third quarter of this year, Chinese smartphone maker, OnePlus, is not about to simply let its current flagship smartphone, the OnePlus One, go quietly into the night and let its successor take the limelight all by itself.

Apparently, OnePlus One will continue to hold sway as the flagship killer that it was regarded to be last year although it will not be as potent as before since it will pass on the reputation to the OnePlus Two when it comes out in a few months time.

Still, OnePlus One will be in the market for a long time, notwithstanding its throngs of satisfied users who are proud to have a flagship handset that basically has the features of other flagship smartphones at half the price.

Indicative of how the Chinese smartphone maker wants the OnePlus One to be around in the market for a long time, an incremental update based on Cyanogen OS 12 has been released for the OnePlus One which brings fixes to several issues that have hounded the smartphone and its users for quite some time.

The incremental update is meant to fix the issues on the OnePlus One related to touchscreen sensitivity, Bluetooth connectivity particularly in several in-car systems, and MMS sending on several carriers, according to the GSM Arena.

The over-the-air (OTA) update is expected to roll out soon but those who are in a hurry can actually download the incremental update directly from the Cyanogen website and they just have to pick he YNG1TAS2I3 build.

Extended warranty

Over at India, OnePlus is giving users of OnePlus One an exciting offer to assure quick service or response to their complaints.

OnePlus has announced that it would ensure that all OnePlus One smartphones in India are serviced in a timely manner within 15 days.

If in case the company is not able to address a specific complaint or service-related issue that the customer brought up with regards to its OnePlus One smartphone within 15 days, the company will compensate the user by automatically giving three months of extended warranty.

OnePlus said in a statement that its latest move in India is the first across the consumer device landscape. It also stated unilaterally that all service-related issues on all OnePlus One smartphones in India to date that have faced delays or have been pending for longer than 15 working days in its support centers will get a three-month extension on their warranty.

To make things even sweeter for all future smartphones from the Chinese smartphone maker, the same service guarantee will apply to all its handsets, OnePlus assured.

Without OnePlus saying it, the service guarantee shall also apply to the upcoming OnePlus Two and the rumored OnePlus One Lite.

OnePlus 2 to get special virtual reality launch event

OnePlus has today announced that they reveal the upcoming OnePlus in July during the worlds first ever Virtual Reality launch event.

Its taken a while but OnePlus has finally revealed the launch date of its upcoming flagship smartphone. You'll be able to see the device on 7PM PT July 27th which means we only have one more month to wait.

Reality remade

The Chinese company plans to launch the device in the first ever Virtual Reality live-stream, letting viewers "stand right next to our team and our fans as we unveil our new flagship". To achieve this, OnePlus has come up with its own VR cardboard headset especially for the event. It should be able to accommodate any devices up to 6 inches in size.

In the past few days we've learnt of some lucrative specifications that will feature in the device, such as the reversible USB-C connector. The OnePlus 2 will be the first smartphone device that carries the new connection standard, beating the likes of Apple and Google to the market. We also know that it will feature the CyanogenMod UI, which is a heavily modified version of the Android OS.

Fire breathing snapdragon

The new flagship Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor is expected to make an appearance alongside 3GB RAM, making this device a speedy performer in benchmarks. Although the chip has been plagued with overheating issues, co-founder of OnePlus Carl Pei has stressed, "Although there have been reports that the 810 runs warmer than its predecessors, we assure you that we have taken all the necessary precautions and beyond to prevent this from occurring in the 2. We worked very closely with Qualcomm's engineers to integrate an improved version of the chipset (v2.1) into the OnePlus 2, and fine-tuned both hardware and software".

That should hopefully re-assure people. We're really looking forward to this device as the last OnePlus was incredibly cheap and very powerful. At a rumoured cost of only £265, it's sure to be a big hit.

Elephone P9000 Is First Smartphone To Break 10 Core Processor

Media Tek Inc.'s (OTCMKTS:MDTKF) deca-core offering is impressive and seemingly coming to a relatively less-known smartphone lineup. This highly sophisticated deca-core package comes with 10 cores, divided in 3 clusters of 2, 4 and 4 cores respectively. It starts off with 2 high powered Cortex A72 clocking at 2.5GHZ processors supported by a quad core A53 processor clocked at 2.0GHZ design, coupled with another low powered quad core A53 at 1.4GHZ designed for smaller tasks and low-end processing needs. HTC One M9 Offered No Massive Departure from the HTC One M8!

The HTC One M9 may have been released in March this year but most HTC fans have branded the current flagship smartphone as a souped-up version of the Taiwanese smartphone maker's HTC One M8 because the former offered no massive departure from the latter.

HTC One M8 is regarded as the most leaked handset in history. Because of the recent release of the HTC One M9, the HTC One M8 can now be bought at much less money than before.

The successor of the HTC One M8 features a re-contoured body shape and a trio of new two-tone color schemes, including a striking silver variant with gold edging. It also has a scratch-resistant coating to the metal shell, details Know Your Mobile.

In terms of what's inside, HTC has improved the BoomSound speakers with the Dolby Audio enhancement as well as the Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 octa-core processor, and a 20-megapixel rear-facing camera.

Second generation HTC One

The HTC One M8 is actually known as the second generation of HTC One or sometimes as the all-new HTC One.

It was officially unveiled in a press conference on March 25, 2014 simultaneously held in both New York and Londo but not before tons of leaks has already made the rounds in the internet. The HTC One M8 was released on the very same day by Verizon Wireless at retail, and also by other Canadian and American carriers for online orders prior to its wider retail availability in mid-April.

The HTC One M8 features a rounded chassis and has a 5-inch 1080-pixel display. It is powered by a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor, a depth of field sensor which can be used to individually refocus and apply various effects to the foreground and background elements of photos taken from the smartphone's higher-resolution front-facing camera.

Just a few weeks after its release, a update has made it to the HTC One M8 which featured improvements to the device's front-facing stereo speakers, expandable storage, new gesture functionality, and a refreshed version of HTC' Sense software.

In August 2014, HTC has unveiled a software variant of the HTC One M8 running on Windows Phone 8.1 instead of Android, aiming to adapt the operating system's experience to the device without any compromises.

The HTC One M8 received mostly positive reviews with particular praise devoted to the design improvements within its hardware and software, and its upgraded internals in comparison to the first generation HTC One.

But it also has some share of criticisms including its large bezels, the lack of significant improvements to the main camera's image quality and the inconsistent quality of the effects enabled by the depth sensor.

LG G4 vs Samsung Galaxy S6: The battle of the nexus!

LG is in an attempt to provide users with a smartphone that offers literally everything in its latest flagship smartphone. The current flagship smartphone LG G4, comes with an unique and attractive design, great performance, and a fantastic camera.

Over the past few years, Samsung's Galaxy S range have fallen victim of repetitiveness. However, the 2015 Galaxy S6 model is being marked as Samsung's best attempt in design.

However, the obvious question is how the new LG G4 can compete with the Galaxy S6, Samsung's so-called best designed smartphone so far. While, after spending time on both devices, here we have published an in-depth comparison of the LG G4 with it's arguably the biggest rival Galaxy S6.

LG G4 And Samsung Galaxy S6 In Pictures

Design

Smartphones are designed to be attractive. The LG G4 is all about attractive curved design. In terms of design, the LG G4 comes with a curved back with variety of cover options including leather back. The presence of 5.5 inch display dictates the overall size of the G4 and slim bezels on the sides of the display makes it a pretty narrow device.

The G4 adopts the same design language as predecessor, delegating the power and volume keys at the back of the phone. The smartphone comes in a curved shape. The rear panel, bezel borders the display and the entire outer shell itself is slightly curved.

LG claim the design as the shock-absorbing bend that makes the G4 20 percent more durable than its earlier version G3.

On the other hand, the Samsung Galaxy S6, this is claimed as the best designed smartphone by the South Korean tech giant so far. The Galaxy S6 is an enhancement of Samsung's design language, by retaining its signature home button and sensor placement. The Galaxy S6 is holds a metal bezel made entirely of aluminium with flat Gorilla Glass 4 on the front and rear of the smartphone.

When it comes to thickness, undoubtedly the Galaxy S6 measure just 6.8mm and beats the LG G4 which measures 9.4 mm thick. But, the G4 has standout in other areas like removable battery, and a microSD card slot for memory expansion.

Meanwhile, the LG G4 fit and feels good in the palm, while the Galaxy S6 is a pretty with dual-glass sides but does not feel so-comfortable compared to the G4.

Under the Hood

The Samsung Galaxy S6 is equipped with Qualcomm Snapdragon SoC, powered by its very own 64-Bit Exynos 7420 processor. The octa-core processor is paired with 3GB of RAM and Mali-T760MP8 GPU. It runs on Android 5.1.1 Lollipop operating system.

The LG G4 is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 processor SoC with a 1.8GHz 64-bit hexa-core CPU and 3GB LPDDR3 RAM. It runs on the latest Android Operating System, Android 5.1 Lollipop. However, LG's processor is slightly weaker, but may produce better battery life.

Display

The Galaxy S6 sports a 5.1 inches Super AMOLED display with Quad HD resolution counting 2560 x 1440 pixels. These display features were equipped in the LG's last year flagship: G3, but the brightness and contrast was compromised.

Now the G4 got an improvement in every way. The company calls it as a 'Quantum' LCD display, which is claimed to be reproduce more accurate and real-colour in the G4. The LG G4 is equipped with a mind-blowing with a 5.5 inch Quad HD IPS Quantum screen housing a resolution of 1440x2560 with 538 PPI and a contrast ratio of 1500:1.

Storage and Battery

Undoubtedly, the LG G4 wins in this area. The G4 comes with a 3000mAh battery. On the other hand, the Galaxy S6 comes with a 2550mAh built-in battery. Another point to be considered is that the LG G4 comes with removable battery.

When it comes to storage, the Samsung has taken Apple-like approach of removing its MicroSD slot and instead provides 32GB, 64GB, and 128GB models of the Galaxy S6. While, the LG decided to make a single model with 32GB which will also includes a microSD card slot that can expand up to 2TB.

Camera

Both LG and Samsung have spent much time in improving the camera in their flagship smartphones. The Galaxy S6 packs a 16 megapixel rear shooter with an f/1.9 aperture lens and comes with built-in optical stabilization. Meanwhile, the LG claims its G4 comes with 'the brightest lens in the world on a smartphone,' and comes with an f/1.8 aperture with a new 'three dimensional optical image stabilization.'

The G4 holds a same 16 megapixel rear camera as the Galaxy S6, but comes with some special features like full manual mode where users can adjust ISO and other professional camera elements and notably can shoot in RAW format, which is a great feature for a photo enthusiastic.

Verdict

So far, the LG G4 had a chance beat the Galaxy S6 in all aspects expect the hardware. The G4 is light, comfortable and feels great in the hand. While the leather back and the display's colour is incredibly impressive. On the other hand, the Galaxy S6 is equipped with a powerful processor under the hood to make sure that it never stuck while working on. To be clear, both smartphones are up to the mark with their own strengths.

Moto X 2nd Gen Gets Price Cut in US: Does it Hint Launch of Moto X 3rd Gen is Imminent?

Moto X (Gen 2) Gets Another Price Cut In India But Only For A Limited Period

Moto X (Gen 2) Gets Another Price Cut In India But Only For A Limited PeriodMotorola Press

Motorola has cut the price of its current flagship smartphone, Moto X (2014) aka Moto X 2nd Gen, amid speculations on the arrival of its Moto X 3rd Generation aka Moto X (2015). The move could be taken as a hint that the launch of the upcoming new device is not far off.

Motorola Head (of North America Sales) Jeff Miller has announced on the company's official blog that prospective buyers in the United States can try out the device for a month risk-free before buying it.

"...We're offering you the opportunity to customize and try a new Moto X for 30 days, risk free at a new off-contract price of $299** (after $50 rebate)," wrote Miller. "To try one out, simply design and order your device at motomaker.com and activate it on a no-contract plan. If you don't love your Moto X, simply ship it back to us for free any time in the first 30 days."

"No hidden fees or restocking charges - and if your Moto X didn't turn out how you envisioned, we'll even give you one "do-over" for another shot at designing your Moto Maker creation. If you love it, keep it and get a $50 discount off the purchase price," he added.

Motorola US has also announced: "Free shipping, easy returns, financing, and trade-in make it easier to ditch contracts. For a limited time, customize your no-contract Moto X starting at just $299.99 (orig. $499.99) after a $50 rebate."

The pricing mentioned in the statement of the company is only for the 16GB variant of the Moto X 2nd generation. An upgrade to 32GB will cost buyers an extra $50, and $100 for the 64GB model. The offer is expected to continue only till the end of this month.

The price cut of the Moto X 2nd gen in the US came a few days after it received ₹8,000 discount for the 16GB model in India. It is now available for ₹21,999 instead of the original price of ₹31,999.

Moto X 2nd Gen has a 5.2-inch AMOLED display of FHD (1,920x1,080 pixels) screen resolution with 423ppi pixel density, quad-core Snapdragon 801 processor clocking at 2.5GHz, Android 4.4.4 KitKat, upgradable to 5.0 Lollipop, 16/32 GB internal memory, 2GB RAM, 13mp main camera and 2mp front snapper and a 2,300mAh battery.

Interestingly, Moto X 2nd gen price-cut came at a time when speculations are rife on the upcoming Moto X 3rd Gen, which is expected to be unveiled in September.

The new device is expected to come with several feature upgrades over its predecessor. A report by STJSGadgets has claimed that it will have features like a 5.2-inch AMOLED display with 2K resolution (2,560x1,440 pixels), Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 SoC, Android 5.1.1 Lollipop, 32GB or 64GB inbuilt memory, 4GB RAM, 16mp main camera, 5mp front snapper and a 3,280mAh battery.
