Xiaomi has joined the Wireless Power Consortium, which is the organisation behind the Qi wireless charging standard, used in most smartphones today.
Chinese upstart Xiaomi is joining the Wireless Power Consortium, the organisation that developed the Qi wireless chargingWhere to buy 1949 2434 2503 standard. Amongst its members are the biggest names in the smartphone industry, including Apple, Samsung, LG and more. The Qi wireless standard is an open standard for wireless charging devices, and has been adopted by many, with Apple being the newest entrant with the iPhone 8 series and the iPhone X.
Xiaomi's entry into the Wireless Power Consortium has sparked speculations that the company's next flagship device may support the feature. While that wouldn't be surprising, coming from Xiaomi, what's perhaps more interesting is whether the company can bring wireless charging to its cheaper smartphone.
The Chinese company has a short history in the market, but it has been known to bring the most premium features to the most affordable price ranges. Xiaomi started its tryst in India with the Mi 3, a device that sported a flagship chipset but would cost you less than the Moto G. Xiaomi has since sold millions of devices in India, and has recently entered the offline space to reach more consumers.
Xiaomi's offline strategy includes a combination of third party partners and its own Mi Home stores, which distinctly resemble Apple Stores overseas. With Apple having wireless chargingWhere to buy 1136 1500 1796 to its smartphone, this is an opportune moment for Xiaomi to advertise such a feature on its much more affordably price smartphones.
