Image Is All for Huawei's New P9 Smartphone Flagship

The P9 Plus bumps up the display to 5.5-inches and introduces Press Touch technology - two level pressure that enables app shortcuts, similar to Apple's 3D Touch.

We've heard the spiel about unbelievable smartphone photos before, but Huawei has several tricks up its sleeve beyond the dual lenses and the Leica signature (we've contacted Huawei about the exact nature of its partnership with Leica, but have not yet heard from them).

The Huawei P9 and the P9 Plus are two new flagships looking to follow on on the success of the P8.

Huawei CEO Richard Yu announcing the Huawei P9 at an event in London.

The front-facing camera is different because while all three variants have the same 8-megapixel sensor, the P9 Plus model also offers autofocus, which means taking selfies is so much better.

The company is also launching a third-generation Huawei TalkBand wearable which functions both as a watch and as a Bluetooth headset, thanks to a detachable earpiece. The reveal itself may have been only a formality for some, since the Huawei P9 has already been leaked and speculated on numerous times prior.

The P9 comes with 2 storage variants. However, we're expecting the actual testing for a better judgment on the quality of the P9's camera.

Inside, the two devices pack the same chipset; Kirin 955 octa-core SoC. However, there are variations in the RAM and storage offering. The P9 comes with a 5.2-inch Full HD display while the P9 Plus has a bigger 5.5-inch screen. The dual-camera unit, manufactured by Leica, will enable users to capture images and shoot videos in both bright and low light conditions. The first model will have 3GB RAM and 32GB capacity whereas second model will have 4GB RAM and 64GB capacity. The pricing for P9 plus is slated at Euro 749.

There's also a laser focus and dedicated camera processor tucked inside which makes taking pictures incredibly fast and blur free. The black and white sensor can capture more details in pictures since it doesn't need to interpret the colors of the objects, it only filters the light.

Running on the latest version of Android, Marshmallow 6.0, both devices use the company's standard OS Emotion, which bears some similarities to iOS regarding its design. The company says that it's going to release the new handsets on April 16th in several markets across Europe and the Middle East with prices starting at €599.
