My electric color Nextbit Robin just arrived today, but unfortunately for Sprint and Verizon Kickstarter backers Nextbit just sent out a letter detailing the cancellation of the CDMA variant. While the news will no doubt disappoint some, keep in mind there was never supposed to be a CDMA model, it was actually added after the GSM version due to high demand. As it turns out, however, it looks like Nextbit was a bit too optimistic in thinking it can modify the GSM version of the phone without spending too much time or money. The crowd-funded company announced on Thursday that it's canceling the CDMA version of its debut device.
"We were not sufficiently doubtful of what we were told given everything we already knew from our experience at previous companies", Moss said. They'll also receive a 25 percent discount code for Nextbit's online store, which can be used by anyone to buy a GSM version of the phone. "What they thought would cost "hundreds of thousands of dollars" has turned into 'millions".
Those hoping to use Robin's thoughtful cloud backup powers on Sprint or Verizon are no strangers to disappointment.
Refunds will be issued for all Kickstarter orders for the CDMA model, as well as for any accessories purchased with the device. While those carriers do offer numerous big-name flagship smartphones nowadays, the fact that they've got CDMA networks means that they often don't sell devices from smaller companies.
According to Nextbit's CEO Tom Moss, the company miscalculated the difficulties involved in launching a CDMA-compatible smartphone.
Unlike some other fund raising websites and projects, Nextbit is giving every CDMA back a full and complete refund within the next 48 hours.
