BlackBerry to launch Android-powered Priv smartphone on January 28

In the previous part of this series, we discussed how hard BlackBerry (BBRY) is trying to increase the distribution of its flagship PRIV smartphone by partnering with telecom providers and launching it in as many countries as possible. According to BlackBerry's blog, T-Mobile will start selling the PRIV on January 26.

Canadian smartphone maker BlackBerry will launch its first Android-based smartphone, aka Priv in India on January 28.

Taking a quick glance at the BlackBerry Priv, the smartphone comes with a sliding physical QWERTY keyboard, and features a 5.4-inch AMOLED display, with a QHD resolution (2560 x 1440).

BlackBerry Priv integrates 32 GB of on-board storage and packs a hot-swappable microSD expansion slot (up to 2TB). It sports an 18-megapixel camera on the rear with Schneider-Kreuznach optics, optical image stabilisation, phase detection autofocus and dualLED (dual tone) flash. While the Indian price hasn't been disclosed as yet, it is expected to fall somewhere between the United States and European pricing, if BlackBerry is to follow the prevalent trend amongst Android vendors. A 2-megapixel front-camera is also on board, and offers HD video recording.

Connectivity options include 4G LTE (with the US variant only showing support for India's FDD-LTE Band 3), Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac with Direct functionality, Bluetooth 4.1, 3.5mm audio jack, Micro-USB, NFC, and GPS/ A-GPS, alongside features like an accelerometer, magnetometer, gyroscope, time of flight (ToF) sensor, proximity sensor, ambient light sensor, altimeter, and activity monitor.
