Why Apple iPhone 7 May Be The Thinnest Phone Ever

Apple Inc.'s (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone 7 is likely to launch sometime late next year, but there are already numerous rumors circulating about the changes the company could bring with its upcoming flagship smartphone. Macotakara, which is considered a reliable source for Apple rumors, recently published a report claiming that the tech giant will axe the traditional 3.5mm headphone jack for the company's lightning port. The report states that Apple has decided to remove the jack as it plans on making the next iPhone 1mm thinner than the iPhone 6s. If the report is true, Apple will build a device that is highly likely to be the thinnest phone ever made; however, users will be deprived of the 3.5mm jack that they have grown accustomed to over the years.

The report highlighted that Apple's popular iPod Touch supports a 3.5mm jack and is still 1mm thinner than the iPhone 6s. Macotakara further said that the 3.5mm jack is already the thinnest one in the market, while also being the industry standard for well over two decades. This is not the first time where Apple has decided to remove the 3.5mm jack from its devices, as it previously mulled over installing the 2.5mm jack on its iPods, but was forced to adapt to the industry-standard 3.5mm jack after user outcry.

Apple has installed the 3.5mm headphone jack on all its devices over the last seven years. However, as technology is evolving and there are other options such as Bluetooth, the tech giant is hoping that its new lightning connector will take the reins from the 3.5mm jack as the industry leader. The company has also alluded toward headphones with a lightning connector briefly in WWDC last year.

The report stated that Apple would be including the new iPhone with the lightning connectors that will house a new digital-to-analog converter for delivering the best sounding earphones that the company has ever produced. There are also reports that the company is making an accessory that will convert all 3.5mm jacks to lightning ports so that users will have no problem with their existing earphones. However users have already starting complaining because every headphone sports a 3.5mm jack and without the DA converter, their existing hardware would be useless. Apple is pushing for the lightning connector with the purchase of Beats Audio, as the company is going towards Bluetooth headsets to get rid of wires once and for all.

Third-party manufacturers are yet to comment on this latest report, as they will now have to include lightning cables or lightning connectors with their headphones to make sure that they work with the iPhone 7. The iPhone 7 would certainly be a lot better in terms of design with the reduced thickness, but removing the industry-standard headphone jack could be the catalyst for the downfall of the iPhone 7.
