SEOUL, Sept. 21 (Yonhap) -- Samsung Electronics Co. and LG Electronics Inc. -- South Korea's two top tech firms -- on Thursday started sales of the Galaxy Note 8 and V30 in the country, with their shipments widely expected to beat those of their predecessors, heralding a hit for each firm, industry sources said.
Samsung is estimated to have sold 400,000 units of the Galaxy Note 8 from Friday to Tuesday through preorders, industry sources said. The figure beats the Galaxy Note 7, which raked in some 380,000 preorders.
Samsung earlier said the combined number of preorders came to 850,000, but the actual figure is presumed to be lower due to delays made by mobile carriers and double-counting errors, they added.
The Galaxy Note 8 boasts a 6.3-inch display, its signature S Pen stylus and a dual-lens camera setup. With the Infinity Display, the company has almost eliminated side bezels to give the device a simple yet immersive design.
The phablet is also the first Samsung flagship smartphone to boast two optically stabilized 12-megapixel lenses that will allow users to take both wide-angle and telephoto shots.
Preorders for the LG V30 were also estimated to be 1.5 times more than for the G6 smartphone launched earlier this year, industry sources added.
The LG V30 features the V series' first organic light-emitting diode (OLED) display and top-notch camera, with one of the lenses adopting an aperture of F1.6. The rear camera also adopted the Crystal Clear Lens for the first time in the industry, claiming the lens permits users to capture more details compared with plastic-based lenses.
The release of the V30 is especially significant for LG Electronics as the company's mobile business posted operating losses for the ninth consecutive quarter as of the April-June period.
