iPhone 8 to finally catch up to other flagship phones with new feature

by Danny Zepeda | June 28, 2017

Apple will reportedly include a brand new Lightning Cable with USB-C Power delivery with the iPhone 8.

The news comes from Barclays analyst Blayne Curtis, who dropped the nugget of information in a research note. Apple will include a 10W adaptor with an integrated USB-C Power Delivery chip. This will allow the iPhone 8 to charge at a much faster rate.

KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo was the first to report the iPhone 8 would include the new USB-C charger capable of faster charging.

The iPhone 7 and 7 Plus come with a 5W adaptor that's equipped with a USB-A female port for the charging cable.

Here's a small excerpt from Curtis' note.

We believe that in the iPhone 8, Apple likely includes Cypress Semiconductor's USB-C Power Delivery chip in the phone and an additional chip within the power brick in box (likely a new 10W, which would use a more integrated solution with Cypress Power Delivery).

The 10W adaptor will be the same one that's included with the 10.5 iPad Pro. The 12.9-inch iPad Pro still features the largest power adaptor (excluding the MacBooks) for Apple devices, coming in at 12W.

The faster charging, along with the expected inclusion of wireless charging, will go a long way in catching up to other flagship smartphones.
