Specifications of Andy Rubin’s “Essential” Smartphone Revealed on GFXBench

Andy Rubin of the Android fame is in the news once again and this time around a majority of the specifications of his upcoming smartphone have been revealed. The first teaser gave away the fact that the phone will come with the bezel-less screen. The phone is apparently dubbed as "Essential" and has now surfaced on the GFX Benchmark tests.

The Essential FIH-PM1 made its mark on the GFXBench and what this means is that we can finally have a sneak peek at the specifications of this mysterious smartphone. Powering the device is a Snapdragon 835 clocked at 2.2GHz. The choice of the processor somewhat indicates the possibility that the Essential is a flagship or a high-end device. Furthermore, the device is fitted with a 4GB RAM and on the imaging front, it offers a 12-Megapixel primary sensor which is capable of recording a 4K video. The secondary camera is an 8-Megapixel sensor which is also capable of recording 4K.

The 2560×1312 px resolution is a telltale sign of a bezel-less display which is most likely to be a 5.5-inch unit. Deducing the display resolution, it's clear that the screen is wider than most of the other smartphones and this once again a subtle hint at an edge to edge display. The listing divulges further specifications including a 16GB internal storage and an accompanying microSD card slot. Andy Rubins, Essential is further expected to run on the Android Nougat out of the box and it's also safe to assume that the operating system will be devoid of a heavy overlay or bloatware of any kind.

Despite what we have seen at this GFXBench listing, the chances are that there might exist more than one prototype of the Essential smartphone and it's quite possible that the production variant may come with slightly varied specifications. That apart, it will be interesting to see how the Essential will pit against the other bezel-less contenders including the Samsung Galaxy S8 and the upcoming iPhone 8.
