Google Announces Pixel 2 Phone

Google's new hardware lead Rick Osterloh revealed some new details about company's flagship smartphone Pixel's successor.

Speaking to AndroidPIT at MWC 2017, Mr. Osterloh mentions that there are plans in place for creating a Pixel successor. "So, you can count on us to follow it".

Osterloh said that even though he couldn't confirm a date, there was an annual rhythm to the industry which you could count on Google to follow.

Last year Google bid farewell to the iconic Nexus line-up of smartphones in favour of the Pixel and Pixel XL - the first devices designed and conceptualised in house by the company. Google Pixel has significantly seen a huge hit among premium android users after its launch a year ago. With the Pixel smartphone, Google has entered into direct competition with Apple and has been able to cement its reputation of offering a premium smartphone platform. The current models of the smartphone were made available in October 2016.

The Google Pixel will be getting a sequel later this year. An important part of the Google Pixel phones is the Snapdragon, 821 chipset and there are very few distributors who carry this chipset.

The reports claim that the new Pixel will be featuring a waterproof design, keeping with the trend of all premium smartphones nowadays.

Google's hardware head wouldn't give a more specific timetable for the new Pixel beyond sometime this year. He also said that the next Pixel smartphone will remain in the premium segment as seen with the Pixel and Pixel XL smartphones.

On the other hand, some major upgrades expected in the Google Pixel 2 are a dual camera setup, fast charging, a flat OLED screen and up to 4K resolution. The Pixel 2 variant would sport a 4k 5.7-inch display. These smartphones are seen as Google's vision of a flawless Android powered smartphone and this is why Google has equipped them with only the best hardware pieces available on the market.

The initial Pixel device featured a 12.3MP primary camera, which put it below the likes of the Samsung Galaxy S7 or Sony's Xperia phones in terms of pure megapixels, but did include a number of clever tools that won it many plaudits.
