Samsung introduced 10 times as many phones as Apple last year, but its mobile division made half as much revenue

More Charts
  •
  • March 29 will be a big day for Samsung. After announcing an upcoming "Galaxy Unpacked" event at the Mobile World Congress trade show in Barcelona this week, the Korean tech giant is all-but-guaranteed to launch its next major flagship phone, the Galaxy S8, on that date.

Given the spectacular failure of Samsung's last flagship, the now-defunct Galaxy Note 7, the company will pin higher-than-usual hopes on its next hero device to rebuild trust, make up for lost profits, and give it a worthy competitor to Apple, which is expected to unveil a significantly redesigned iPhone model in the fall.

Along those lines, it's worth noting that Samsung's mobile division has fallen well behind its chief rival in recent years. This chart from Statista tells the story: While the two are neck-and-neck when it comes to overall unit sales, Apple now makes roughly twice as much revenue from mobile devices. This is despite the fact that Samsung sold more than 30 different phones in 2016, whereas Apple sold just three.

A must-have high-end Galaxy S8 may not reduce the deficit completely, but it would go some way toward erasing Apple's position as the only company making real profits off smartphones.

Huawei takes aim at ailing Samsung with new smartphone

Huawei's CEO Richard Yu presents the new phone Huawei's P10 during a press conference on February 26, 2017 in Barcelona on the eve of the start of the Mobile World Congress

China's Huawei unveiled a new smartphone with a better camera on Sunday as it tries to fill the void left by Samsung's withdrawal of its flagship device due to problems with the battery.

Huawei's P10 and the larger P10 Plus, launched on the sidelines of the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, the world's biggest annual phone expo, feature dual Leica rear camera lenses, a longer-lasting battery and fingerprint sensor system.

"The P10 and the P10 Plus will make every shot a cover shot," Richard Yu, chief executive of Huawei's consumer business group, said at the presentation.

Huawei, the world's third-largest phone maker, has taken aim in recent years at the high end of the market, which is dominated by Apple and Samsung though neither company is presenting new smartphones in Barcelona.

Apple normally steers clear of the event. It launched a new iPhone 7 in September.

Samsung, which withdrew its Galaxy Note 7 last October after faulty batteries led several devices to catch fire, decided to put off presenting a new flagship smartphone until later this year.

That leaves Huawei as the biggest firm to present a new device in Barcelona, giving it a rare opportunity to grab the spotlight at the show.

Chinese multinational telecommunications company Huawei unveils their new smartwatch, Watch 2 4G, in Barcelona on February 26, 2017

The company managed to gain ground on Samsung and Apple in terms of market share last year, increasing its share of the smartphone sector to 8.9 percent in 2016 from 7.3 percent a year earlier, according to the Gartner consultancy group.

Samsung saw its market share shrink over the same period by two full percentage points to 20.5 percent and Apple contracted to 14.4 percent from 15.9 percent.

The P10 will sell for 649 euros ($685), the P10+ will cost 799 euros. The two models will hit shops next month.

Huawei also unveiled a new smartwatch, with a more sporty look than the first device it introduced two years ago, targeting fitness users.

Earlier on Sunday South Korea's LG, the world's sixth bestselling smartphone maker, unveiled a new flagship model that is designed for split-screen use so that can show two apps at once. It also has dual rear cameras.

BLACKBERRY has launched a brand-new flagship phone

The Express.co is reporting that BLACKBERRY has launched a brand-new flagship phone – the BlackBerry KEYOne, previously codenamed Mercury – that puts the Canadian technology brand firmly back in the smartphone game.

After weeks of leaks and endless rumours, the BlackBerry Mercury – now officially known as BlackBerry KEYOne has dropped ahead of the Mobile World Congress gathering in Barcelona.

Merging the old with the new, the phone retains BlackBerry's iconic physical QWERTY keyboard, building it around a stunning touchscreen display and a set of specs capable of rivalling the iPhone 7.

Although a device that marks a new era for BlackBerry phones, the KEYOne will continue to grab attention for the same reason as its predecessors – that physical keyboard.

More than just a collection of keys, the Smart Keyboard responds to touch gestures, with flick typing support available alongside trackpad style gestures that make navigating web pages and emails a simple process.

As well as letting you speed up your email replies and work-based typing sessions, the phone's keyboard can also let you jump straight into certain tasks, allowing users to programme up to 52 customisable shortcuts.

THESE INCLUDE PROCESS QUICKENING SHORTCUTS INCLUDING PRESSING

These include process quickening shortcuts including pressing 'I' to open your inbox, or 'M' to access maps.

These QWERTY keys aren't the phone's only input method either, with a 4.5-inch 3:2 display sat above the physical controls.

This panel offers all the usual touch skills and visual delights thanks to a 1620 x 1080 pixel resolution.

Where the KEYOne doesn't match up to the likes of Samsung Galaxy S7 and iPhone 7, however, is raw power, with the mid-range Snapdragon 625 processor running the show instead of the top of the line 835.

This is partnered with a huge 3505mAh battery that's enhanced by Qualcomm's Quick Charge 3.0 abilities that will allow the phone to go from flat to 50 per cent charge in just 36 minutes.

THE PHONE ISNT JUST PACKED WITH A MASS OF HIGH END COMPONENTS EITHER

The phone isn't just packed with a mass of high-end components either, it looks great too.

Combining an anodised aluminium frame with a soft touch back, the BlackBerry KEYOne oozes the company's traditional class in a form that will look as comfortable in the boardroom as it will on a night out.

Although bearing the BlackBerry name, the new phone has actually been pieced together by third party manufacturer TCL as the first device of a partnership between the two companies.

"Impressively designed to be distinctly different, the BlackBerry KEYOne reimagines how we communicate by offering unmatched productivity and the world's most secure Android smartphone experience," said Nicolas Zibell, CEO for TCL Communication.

"We're humbled to play such an important role in the future of BlackBerry smartphones, which have been so iconic in our industry, and we're eager to prove to the BlackBerry community that their excitement around this new BlackBerry smartphone is something they can be proud of as well."

Finishing off the phone's impressive specs sheet, the latest BlackBerry smartphone runs a 12-megapixel camera on the rear using the Sony IMX378 camera sensor – that's the same snapper fitted within the brilliant Google Pixel.

Huawei Watch 2 with Android Wear 2.0 OS Leaked, Comes in Three Colors

At the upcoming Mobile World Congress event, Huawei is not limiting itself to the P10 and P10 Plus smartphones. The leak from Evan Blass confirmed the second gen Huawei Watch also to be unveiled alongside the flagship smartphones. The new smartwatch codenamed Leo will be retailing as Huawei Watch 2. The Huawei Watch launched in 2015 is still one of the well-designed smartwatches till date, but the Huawei Watch 2 is completely transformed into a sportier look. Another Chinese company, ZTE already confirmed to unveil its first Android-based smartwatch at the MWC 2017.

Just like the ZTE's smartwatch, the Huawei Watch 2 will also come with Android Wear 2.0 onboard. Earlier this month, Google unveiled the Android Wear 2.0 OS after delaying for quite a few months. Along with Android Wear 2.0 announcement, Google also launched the LG Watch Style and Watch Sport smartwatches running on the latest Android Wear OS. Talking about the Huawei Watch 2, it comes with all beefy specifications more like the LG Watch Sport than the Watch Style. It supports NFC and can be used for making payments with Android Pay.

It comes in Black, Orange and Gray colors, where the Black and Orange color bands come with textured finish while the Gray color variant has the speckled plain band. From the images, we can see two buttons on the right side of the bezel. There is no rotatable power button as seen on the LG Watch Sport and Watch Style. The SIM card tray can be found under the bottom strap attachment area. On the back, we can find the Heart rate sensor and the charging pins for connecting with charging dock. Connectivity options expected on Huawei Watch 2 are 4G LTE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and NFC.

There is no other information available about this new Android Wear 2.0 powered smartwatch. Since the company's press conference is scheduled for February 26th, we will be getting complete details of the Huawei Watch 2 along with the Huawei P10 and P10 Plus smartphones. On the same day, we will be seeing the all new LG G6 and Samsung Galaxy Tab S3 from LG and Samsung respectively. Stay tuned on Phone Radar for more updates!

Samsung is still overloading the smartphone market

    More Charts
  •
  • The year's biggest trade show for smartphones, Mobile World Congress, kicks off next week, and there'll be plenty of mobile gadgets on display.

One company that won't make its usual splash, though, is Samsung. While Android's biggest phone maker typically uses MWC to launch its flagship Galaxy S phone, all signs point to the company holding off for a month, and using the event to showcase a new tablet instead.

While that could be viewed as a setback, and while the Galaxy S8 is a crucial release for Samsung, it's worth remembering that the Korean firm's phone business is still about volume as much as centralizing around one high-end model.

This chart from Statista gets at the idea: Though Apple is in a dead heat with Samsung in terms of global market share, the former only released three phones in 2016, while the latter launched a whopping 31. That number is actually down significantly from where it was two years ago.

iPhone 8 Rumors: Apple’s New Smartphone To Start At 64GB Storage, AMOLED But Not Curved Display For USD1,000+

iPhone 8 Rumors: Apple's New Smartphone To Start At 64GB Storage, AMOLED But Not Curved Display For USD1,000+

    Thursday, February 23, 2017 12:02 AM UTC

Several reports are shaping up the final look of Apple's highly-anticipated flagship smartphone for 2017: the iPhone 8.

According to Taiwan-based market intelligence company TrendForce, the release of iPhone 8 will come with a storage capacity upgrade. Citing supply chain sources, TrendForce said the iPhone 8 will come in 64GB and 256GB variants. The move was unusual for the company, as Forbes notes, considering the company has been offering storage capacity variants in threes in the last few debuts. Moreover, iPhone 7 was released in 32GB, 128GB and 256B variants.

Apple Insider also reported that instead of a curved display, TrendForce claimed that it will have the same "2.5D" glass found on Apple's latest devices, including iPhone 7, at 4.7 inches and 5.5 inches. Although Apple indeed has signed a multi-billion dollar deal with Samsung to purchase its OLED panels, production yields and drop-test results on smartphones with curved displays could be the contributing reason why.

Know Your Mobile also cited KGI Securities analyst Ming-chi Kuo, who has had a 100-percent track record when it comes to Apple and iPhone predictions, who said that the phone will also come with a "revolutionary" front camera setup, a part of it will incorporate a new 3D sensor to work in tandem with the 2D images to create "3D selfies." Moreover, the phone will also have facial recognition technology, thanks no doubt to Apple-owned Israeli tech firm RealFace, a leader of this new technology.

It would be interesting to see whether reception for the iPhone 8, once it comes out, will be warmer than the previous flagship phone. For a price of USD1,000+, iPhone 8 will be a real test to Apple fans.

An Affordable Flagship Android Phone? – ZTE AXON 7 Review

ZTE AXON 7 Review – You may have heard or seen ZTE phones here in Australia. Usually, they are some cheap phones you can grab while getting a low cost prepaid plan. To those who can afford higher end smartphones, ZTE may not be so familiar – til now.

Their latest ZTE AXON 7 has been promoted as a high-end flagship phone that has all the bells and whistles, without breaking the budget.

With an RRP of AU $699, is the ZTE AXON 7 comparable to the flagship phones from the other manufacturers? Let's find out.

ZTE AXON 7 Review – Packaging

    ZTE AXON 7 Review-1 ZTE AXON 7 Review-2

Packaging looks is one of the best I've seen, with matching Gold theme prominent throughout the contents inside. It does scream premium the moment you open the box.

ZTE AXON 7 Review – Design & Features

    ZTE AXON 7 Review-3 ZTE AXON 7 Review-4

The AXON 7 looks like a premium device and I kind of like the subtle Gold colour on my review unit, compared to the usual brighter Gold from the other brands. They are not too striking and doesn't attract much attention.

The fingerprint unlock is located at the back of the phone, which means it's really easy to reach when you hold the phone (or after you lift it up from a desk or a pants' pocket), but awkward if you want to unlock while the phone lies on a surface.

    ZTE AXON 7 Review-12 ZTE AXON 7 Review-6

It's slim and curvy, which makes it easier to grab off the desk and the material does not feel slippery as well. I was using the AXON 7 without a case and it never fell off my hand.

    Display

    ZTE AXON 7 REVIEW

The 5.5″ AMOLED QHD (1440p) near-bezel-less display covers a wide area on the phone. The display is bright and a great eye candy when you pick a high quality wallpaper for the lock screen. The ZTE Locker gives you fresh new wallpapers every day but I wish I could select the one I like most and set it permanently.

The speaker grills are all located at the front of the phone and though the cut-outs near the front camera may look funny at first, I'm grateful of the front speakers design because they sound really awesome.

    Sound

The Dual Hi-Fi audio chipsets (AKM 4961 HiFi Recording Processor combined with the AKM 4490 HiFi Audio Amplifier) inside the phone deliver one of the best sound experience in a phone – things that I thought would not be possible. And if you like listening to music with a good set of headphones, your ears are in for a treat.

If you love listening to music or watching YouTube videos on a speaker phone, the AXON 7 does not disappoint either. The speakers are able to output loud, clear voice, and even supports Dolby Atmos. Watching the Dolby Atmos demo videos installed on the phone is quite breathtaking. To be honest, this is one of the best experience I've had in terms of sound output coming from a phone. Not to mention that you can further tweak the channels to your liking.

    Camera

    ZTE AXON 7 Review-7

And then, it all comes down to the camera. You can easily differentiate between a mid range and a high end phone from the photos they took.

On paper, the front camera is an 8 Megapixel camera that supports 1080p video recording. The rear camera is 20 Megapixels with F1.8 Aperture and surprisingly comes with an Optical Image Stabilisation (it actually has Dual Image Stabilisation with both OIS and EIS/Electronic). This helps you from having shaky, unfocused shots when there are not enough lights around.

Overall, the camera take great shots outdoor in the daylight. The produced colour is natural and not overly saturated with auto post-processing.

    IMG_20170218_084413

    IMG_20170221_174257

Here are similar scenes taken on different weather conditions:

    IMG_20170216_091449

    IMG_20170218_123830

    IMG_20170218_085207

The picture above was a really challenging sunny day of Melbourne and we could see the HDR kicked in, trying to preserve the scene as much as possible.

In terms of low lit photography, it looks like AXON 7 is capable to take good shots without much light. Of course, higher-end, more expensive phones with better lens can do better but then again, for a $699 phone, this is pretty decent.

    IMG_20170218_233132

    IMG_20170218_233258

    IMG_20170219_162741

Again, you cannot compare ZTE AXON 7 Camera (low light performance) to an Apple iPhone 7 Plus, Google Pixel, or other higher end smartphones that cost double, but the AXON 7 definitely stands on its own above mid-range phone of similar price. It's pretty good for social media shares but perhaps not when you want to view photos taken in low light on a 32″ screen.

    Powerhouse

    ZTE AXON 7 Review-10

The ZTE AXON 7 is powered by a Snapdragon 820 processor with 4GB of RAM for a smooth performance experience. Note that this is the same powerhouse inside a Samsung Galaxy 7 phone yet it costs a few hundreds more! We're definitely happy to see what you get with the AXON 7 here – the same power you get from a flagship phone but more budget friendly.

If you like to compare benchmark results, here the Geekbench 4 and AnTuTu results that I ran on the ZTE AXON 7:

    Screenshot_2017-02-21-13-16-00 Screenshot_2017-02-21-13-22-29

Compared to the recently reviewed OPPO R9s (around $100 cheaper), the AXON 7 is definitely more superior in handling graphics and more complicated tasks.

    Other things worth mentioning:

    – Fast charging through USB-C.

    – Dual Nano SIM / microSD combo tray (either two Nano SIMS(4G/3G/2G Dual Standby), or a single Nano SIM + microSD card.

    – The navigation keys can be swapped around and the power management has a powerful feature that allows you to set the power management per app to save even more battery life.

    Screenshot_2017-02-15-12-29-07  Screenshot_2017-02-21-16-25-07

    – I like how ZTE MiFavor overlays tips when you perform a specific operation for the first time (such as unlocking your screen or opening the Camera app). It's great for first timers, especially those who are not too techy or own a smartphone before as they may not know about all the gestures and swipe techniques.

    – The AXON 7 is also compatible with Google's DayDream VR, but only with the upcoming Android Nougat Update, which is not officially released yet in Australia.

    – NFC

ZTE AXON 7 Review – Conclusion

    ZTE AXON 7 Review-11

ZTE AXON 7 is indeed a worthy flagship Android phone with all the bells and whistles like NFC, high quality audio chipsets with Dolby Atmos front speakers support, fast fingerprint sensor, along with a fast and powerful 2.15GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 Quad core 64bit CPU with 4GB LPDDR4 RAM. Compared to the other flagship phones, the AXON 7 is on par and sometimes yields a better performance (I was researching the benchmark comparisons with Google Pixel & other flagship phones).

The primary (rear) camera is probably not its strongest asset for a flagship phone, but as you can see from my photo samples above, the photos are pretty good if you have decent lighting (even in low lit condition with a bit of lighting here and there).

If getting super squeaky clean and clear photos in low lit condition is your priority, you may want to look elsewhere. But if you want a phone with the complete package (power, sound, display, performance, and experience), ZTE AXON 7 will not disappoint you.

ZTE AXON 7 can be purchased at JB Hi-Fi Australia with an RRP of AU $699 or from Amazon.

SmartHouse Best Of The Best Awards 2017: Day One

Vendor Of The Year: Fetch TV

If there is one market that is brutally competitive today, it's the content provisioning market where the likes of Foxtel, Stan and Netflix are battling it out for supremacy. One company that stands out in this brutal battle is Fetch TV.

Not only do they have an interface for managing content and applications that is among the best in the world, they also have a superior platform in their Mini and Mighty boxes. As a company, Fetch TV has achieved significant growth this year, because management is focused on delivering technology and content that is seriously good and offers an exceptional experience for consumers.A big advantage is that all their software design and coding is done in Australia with no third party dependencies. This gives them both flexibility and control, along with a speed to market that Foxtel and Telstra can only dream about.

This approach has led to the development of a platform and user interface that is rich in features and extremely easy to use whether you are accessing content via their boxes or using the Fetch TV smartphone or tablet app.

If you are sitting in a restaurant or bar you can use the Fetch TV app to record whatever programs you want, and if you're heading off on an overseas trip you can download movies and shows to your device to watch on the plane. Not only does Fetch TV deserve our Vendor of the Year Award, I suspect that they are set to become a major player as their partners (Optus, iiNet and Vocus) do battle with the Telstra/Foxtel alliance for both NBN market share and entertainment dollars and eyeballs.

Product Of The Year: Lenovo Yoga Book

The Lenovo Yoga Book is one of those products that when you first open it there is a lot of mystic and expectation.A notebook that runs both Android and Windows (separate units of course). A screen you can write on with a pen. A Halo Keyboard, a touch-sensitive surface with haptic feedback that can be used for drawing on as well as typing.

What really got me was when I put a writing pad over the keyboard and what I wrote through 60 pages of paper appeared on the screen. Ultra-thin (and ultra-light), this 10.1 inch magnesium-alumin¬ium alloy device is seriously out there when it comes to innovation. The screen is super bright and the battery outperforms both my iPad and Samsung Galaxy S2 tablet by a long way.

Recently I got 15 hours out of the device on a flight to New York. The Yoga Book's black slate lights up with a Qwerty keyboard, allowing you to type away as normal. Deactivate it, and the black slate becomes a Wacom-like surface, which you can write or draw on with an included stylus. This is one seriously must have product.

    Best Smartphone: LG V20

The LG V20 is a smartphone that initially slipped under our radar. It was not till I took the V20 on the road that I really get a deep understanding of the capability of this device. It's wafer thin, yet packs a battery that delivers exceptional life even when accessing web sites and video clips all day long. It's also fast and has a display screen that delivers crystal sharp images right to the edge of the device. In fact, this device is so good that it makes the Apple iPhone 7 look like yesterday's technology.

The software is beautifully laid out and accessing contacts and making calls is extremely easy because of the layout and the way that information is delivered to the screen. This device has not been seen as a mainstream smartphone, for the simple reason that some carriers did not range it when it was first launched. This was a fatal mistake because this device is better than any other smartphone out there.

    Best Combination Smartphone: Moto Z

The Motorola Moto Z is the world's thinnest smartphone, and it's also the best modular smartphone on sale today. What Motorola, who are owned by PC design powerhouse Lenovo, have been able to do is out-spec any other smartphone out there while delivering add-on modular accessories such as a Hasselblad camera, JBL speaker or extended battery that seamlessly fit onto the back of the Moto Z.

In designing this concept Motorola didn't dial back the performance just to set a new thinness record. In fact it's no less powerful than any of its flagship competition. There's a quad-core 1.8GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor with integrated Adreno 530 graphics, 4GB of RAM, and a generous 64GB of storage. MicroSD cards of up to 2TB are supported.Get this device in your hands along with the Hasselblad camera, JBL speaker and camera mods and you will not want to put this kit down.

    Best Powerbank: Cygnett ChargeUp Digital

2017 was a whopper year for the powerbank category. Manufacturers have struggled to keep up with the needs of consumers when it comes to battery life – and Cygnett have stepped in to bridge the gap. What's more, the ChargeUp Digital touts a slim, streamlined lithium polymer build that affords the range an edge in both form and function.

It'll charge your phone or other device faster than a standard wall or computer charging port and the versatile aesthetic ensures it'll compliment your phone nicely.Available in both 10,000mAh or 6,000mAh variants, Cygnett have incorporated a smart digital display that will allow you to keep track of precisely how much charge is left in the powerbank. If you're looking for a dedicated powerbank, this is one to go with.

Best Value Phone: Alcatel Idol 4S

A sleek and steel-lined bundle of glass and aluminium, it bears more than a passing resemblance to more-expensive flagship devices it's competing with. It's surprisingly thin with 5.5-inch AMOLED display ensuring it's nice to look at and nicer still to use. From there, the inclusion of virtual reality can't help but sweeten the deal.

Alcatel's new Idol 4S doesn't just play to the manufacturer's strengths but goes above and beyond them. It's an impressive package and the closest they've ever gotten to delivering a 'flagship at half the price'

    Best 360-Degree Camera: 360Fly

With such a large range of different 360-degree cameras on the market, it can sometimes take a new player to shake things up with unique products and strong features. That's exactly what 360fly have done with their 4K camera. The 360fly 4K camera packs in a 16-megapixel image sensor that can capture 2880×2880 resolution photos and videos without annoying seams and stitching that affect other 360-degree cameras. The 4K camera is water resistant, dustproof and shockproof, making it ideal to take on adventures.

An accompanying app makes it easy to edit and share video right from your phone. The 360fly 4K also features an Autopilot Action Tracker, self-editing to reduce long videos down to highlight reels, and it can even act a second camera with the 16:9 POV mode. 360fly combines the best features of 360-degree and 4K action cameras in one great package.

Best Mirrorless Camera: Panasonic Lumix G85

There are plenty of competitors in the mirrorless camera space, all vying for customers that want a great camera without having to carry around a bulky camera body and big lenses. But Panasonic is the one brand that has consistently offered some of the best mirrorless cameras around without compromising picture quality, and the Lumix G85 is no different. It can shoot 16.1-megapixel photos and 4K video, and features an upgraded OLED electronic viewfinder along with a 3-inch articulating touchscreen. Plus 5-axis dual image stabilisation and an electro-magnetically driven shutter work together to deliver great picture quality.

Panasonic have added weather resistance to the Lumix G85, making it ideal for use while travelling or on the go. In your hand, the magnesium alloy camera body feels tough but is still comfortable to hold. Asus Zenfone 3 Go with 5″ HD Display & 13MP Camera Announced in Taiwan

Just yesterday, Asus launched the 2nd gen Zenfone Go 5.0 LTE smartphone in India. Till now, the company launched the Zenfone Go series parallelly to the flagship Zenfone series. However, with the upcoming the Zenfone 3 Go, the company might end its confusing naming saga. At the company's press meet in Taiwan, the company mentioned to launch the Zenfone 3 Go along with the premium Zenfone AR and Zenfone 3 Zoom smartphones in this quarter (1Q16). Talking about the Zenfone 3 Go, it comes with a metal built body featuring a 2.5D glass on the front. Asus is marketing the device which can make the live streams look beautiful.

The device will be offering beautification mode for the Facebook and YouTube live videos. To make the audio clearer during the video calls and video chats, the company is offering dual MEMS mics and five-magnet speaker with the built-in smart amp. While the recently launched Zenfone G0 5.0 LTE came with a rear facing volume rocker button; the Zenfone 3 Go sticks to the standard placement. Both the volume rocker and power button are placed on the right edge of the device. It sports a 5-inch display with HD (1280 x 720 pixels) resolution. Just below the display, we can find the three capacitive buttons. There is no fingerprint sensor on this device.

It comes powered by the Snapdragon 410 quad-core processor. It packs 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage. The device might also offer expandable storage option with the hybrid SIM slot. Coming to the cameras, there is a 13MP rear camera with LED flash and 1.4 μm pixel size. On the front is a 5MP sensor which also comes accompanied with soft LED flash for capturing better selfies in the low light conditions. Connectivity options on the Zenfone 3 Go include 4G LTE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, 3.5mm Audio port, and a MicroUSB 2.0 port. The device will be soon made available in Taiwan for a price of NT$5,000 (approx $160 / Rs. 11,000).

Talking about the Zenfone AR and Zenfone 3 Zoom, both these devices are announced at the recently concluded CES 2017 event in Las Vegas. The Zenfone AR is the world's first smartphone to feature 8GB of RAM. It is the only smartphone to come with both Tango and Daydream support. FYI, Asus is also the first manufacturer to launch a 4GB RAM smartphone. On the other hand, the Zenfone 3 Zoom is the company's first ever smartphone to come equipped with dual lens camera. Asus also announced that the Zenfone 4 series launch will happen only in June or July. Though the company first decided to launch the next-gen flagship devices in April or May, the shortage of LCD displays and DRAM made the company to delay the launch.

New Sony Smartphone Codenamed Pikachu with Helio P20 SoC Spotted Online

All the major smartphone manufacturers including Samsung, Sony, LG, and Huawei will be launching their new smartphones at the Mobile World Congress that will be held from February 27th to March 2nd in Barcelona. While Samsung is skipping the launch of its flagship smartphones, Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus; LG and Huawei had already confirmed to launch the LG G6 and Huawei P10 smartphones. Coming to Sony, the company will be holding its press conference on February 26th and is expected to unveil five new smartphones. At last year's MWC, the company came up with the new X series by launching the Sony Xperia X, Xperia XA, and Xperia X Performance smartphones.

While there is clear information about the Sony smartphone that will be launched at this year's event, a new mid-range smartphone codenamed Pikachu is spotted on GFXbench. It comes with a 5-inch display with HD (1280 x 720 pixels) resolution. We expect this to be the successor to Sony Xperia XA which also came with the same 5-inch HD display. The Xperia XA2 or the Xperia XA 2017 comes powered by the MediaTek Helio P20 (MT6757T) octa-core processor clocked at 2.3GHz and coupled with Mali-T880 MP2 GPU. It also packs 2GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage. Last year's Xperia XA came with Helio P10 SoC, 2GB of RAM, and 16GB of internal storage.

Talking about the cameras, there is a 21MP rear camera with autofocus and LED flash. According to the listing, it can record video only at Full HD resolution. There is also an 8MP front camera for selfies and video calls. The earlier leaks suggested the Xperia XA2 to come with a 23MP rear camera and a 16MP front camera. It runs on the latest Android 7.0 Nougat out of the box. We expect the device to support dual SIM dual standby along with expandable storage option using the hybrid SIM slot. The device comes with a bunch sensors including Accelerometer, Compass, Proximity, and Light Sensor. While the Xperia XA lacks the fingerprint sensor, we expect the company to offer at least on its successor. Connectivity options on this device include 4G LTE, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, GPS, and NFC.

Recently, a few images are posted on Weibo which are expected to be of the Xperia X2, the successor to Xperia X. The It comes with 4GB of RAM and will be the company's flagship. Earlier to this, the Sony flagship smartphones came with only 3GB of RAM. As the company's press conference is 10 days away, we can expect more leaks to follow in the coming days. However, the official specifications along with device names will be known only the launch day. Stay tuned on Phone Radar for more details about the upcoming Sony smartphones!

Huawei Honor V9: the latest flagship with 5.7-inch quad HD with Kirin 960 and latest Nougat 7.0 OS

Details WhaTech Channel: Mobile Reviews Published: 15 February 2017 Submitted by Eza Ezamie News from Eza Ezamie Viewed: 6 times

    Huawei Honor V9 photo

Expected to be launched by next month, Honor V9 is the latest flagship to hit the market with high specs, and a reasonable price tag to go with it.

It has been almost nine months since the Honor V8 was released, and back then it was one of the first few to feature a dual primary camera as its strong point. Now we can see almost every other mid-range to high-end smartphone to have this interesting feature which have been mesmerizing the crowd.

Let us first do a quick recap on the Honor V8 for just a bit:

  • 5.7-inch Quad HD IPS-NEO LCD capacitive touchscreen with 1440 x 2560 pixels or ~515 ppi pixel density
  • Fingerprint sensor
  • HiSilicon Kirin 955 chipset with Octa-core (4x2.5 GHz Cortex-A72 & 4x1.8 GHz Cortex A53) processor, Mali-T880 MP4 graphics and 4GB RAM
  • Dual 12MP primary camera with f/2.2, 27 mm, Leica optics, phase detection autofocus, dual-LED (dual tone) flash and 8MP secondary camera
  • 32GB/64GB internal storage + microSD expansion slot up to 256GB
  • Non-removable Li-Ion 3500 mAh battery
  • Android Marshmallow 6.0
  • Dual-sim and 4G LTE
  • May 2016 release date
  • $309 price tag
  • Even when the Honor V8 was released in May last year, it put on quite a good show and was well received by the crowd. Huawei was among the first manufacturer to be championing the dual primary camera setup, with its collaboration with the legendary Leica; that provides for the lens.

Now with the Honor V9, what is it that we can expect from the successor? Apparently, a lot as you can see from the below:

  • 5.7-inch Quad HD IPS-NEO LCD capacitive touchscreen with 1440 x 2560 pixels or ~515 ppi pixel density
  • Fingerprint sensor
  • HiSilicon Kirin 960 chipset, Octa-core (4x2.4 GHz Cortex-A73 & 4x1.8 GHz Cortex-A53) processor, Mali-G71 MP8 graphics and 4GB/6GB RAM
  • Dual 12MP + 2MP primary camera with phase detection autofocus and dual-LED (dual tone) flash
  • 8MP secondary camera with f/2.4 aperture
  • 64GB/128GB internal storage + microSD expansion slot up to 256GB maximum
  • Non-removable Li-Ion 3900 mAh battery
  • Android Nougat 7.0 OS
  • Dual-sim and 4G LTE
  • February 21st launch date, March 2017 release date
  • From the looks of it, the Honor V9 gets a deserved upgrade on its hardware and software. These few upgrades and updates make for a more formidable smartphone that should be feared of in 2017.

Yes, there will still be a similar 5.7-inch Quad HD IPS-NEO LCD and fingerprint sensor, but how much more can you improve on these? At least now the Honor V9 will be sporting a 2.5D curved glass which makes for a firmer grip and looks better as well.

Performance-wise, the Honor V9 will now be sporting the latest Kirin 960 chipset, better graphics and an option to go for 6GB RAM.

The dual primary camera seems to be getting no upgrade, same as the selfie camera.

Another advantage the Honor V9 have over its predecessor is you can now opt for 128GB of internal storage which is huge enough to install all your apps, games and so much more.

In terms of battery, the 3900 mAH battery is available which should have no trouble powering up the smartphone for at least a day in between charging.

Last but not least, the latest Nougat 7.0 OS is accompanying the Honor V9's release which provides for some nice features and functions.

    Conclusion:

Huawei Honor V9 have such high standards that it has to live up for, especially with a predecessor that enjoyed great success. Since it already has such a strong base, the inclusion of a 2.5D curved glass, upgrades its hardware, larger storage option, bigger battery capacity and the latest Nougat OS makes for a really strong smartphone for 2017.

The only thing missing for now is on its price.

Huawei Honor V9 is set to be launched on February 21st and released in March although there's no confirmation on the price just yet. It will be available in Silver, Gold and Rose Gold color.

Vernee's new Apollo 2 flagship will have 8GB RAM; first phone to use 10-core Helio X30 chip

The image also notes that the Apollo 2 will be the world's first smartphone to use MediaTek's new deca-core Helio X30 SoC, which was announced last September.

The main highlight of the smartphone will of course be the chipset.

A teaser from Vernee last month, shown above, hinted at plans to launch a new device with the X30, although it hadn't previously confirmed that that handset would be the Apollo 2. It integrates the IMG-7XTP-Mt4 GPU clocked at 820 MHz, which is expected to be a fantastic performer. Leaked benchmarks suggest the Helio X30 will be competitive against flagship mobile SoCs from Qualcomm, enjoying a healthy lead over the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 chipset from past year in AnTuTu benchmark. In addition to being the first smartphone to be powered by this flagship processor, the smartphone will also join the likes of ASUS ZenFone AR in becoming the first smartphone to ship with a monstrous 8GB of RAM. With the introduction of the Apollo 2 smartphone, Vernee will join the elites in shipping a device that has the highest-end hardware configuration of 2017. For now we know there will be two versions with different internal storage and RAM - one with 6GB + 64 GB and another with 8GB + 128GB.

Well, it's February now - and we're learning more information on the new smartphone.

The Apollo 2 will be unveiled at the Mobile World Congress industry expo in Barcelona later this month.

Samsung to release Galaxy S8 in March, says report

Samsung is gearing up for the launch of its new flagship smartphone, with reports that there will be the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8+, not the S8 edge like we've come to know and love from the two previous generation Galaxy smartphones.

But now a new report from The Wall Street Journal is teasing that Samsung will unleash its new Galaxy S8 in March, with an unveiling event in New York City on March 28. Samsung will have Galaxy S8 and S8+ units ready for April 21, which is perfect - my wife's birthday, and her S7 needs replacing.

We can expect Qualcomm's it-has-everything-including-the-kitchen-sink Snapdragon 835 processor, edged displays, 3.5mm headphone jack (because that's a thing now, you know), bezel free display, and a rear fingerprint sensor. A virtual assistant will also be included, in the form of something called S-Assistant.

We will be all over the launch of the Galaxy S8, so keep your eyes peeled here on TweakTown!

LG G6 Confirmed to Feature Snapdragon 821 Chipset

If LG had waited for the SD835 to be made available to other smartphone makers, the G6 would have launched in May or early June.

This confirmation comes by way of a photo that was taken at CES 2017 of a confidential LG presentation slide (see above), but while the 821 is no slouch, why would LG decide to outfit its main flagship smartphone with a piece of silicon from a year ago? Which does mean that by the time support is widespread enough (at the device and carrier level), devices such as the LG G6 will already be outdated and likely already discontinued. Though for now, there's no information on how much RAM will be on board the LG G6. The leak has been shared by SemiAccurate, which cites a confidential presentation in which LG showcased the device. A leaked slide showing the G6 running a Snapdragon 821 has been leaked, along with the manufacturer detailing why it chose to rush the upcoming announcement rather than wait for Snapdragon 835 shipments to finally become available. And now a new report confirms previous rumors that LG's next flagship will in fact not feature the latest Snapdragon 835 chipset, instead it'll run the the Snapdragon 821 processor.

Samsung is mass-producing the Snapdragon 835 processor for Qualcomm this time around, and because of this partnership, we've heard reports indicating that Samsung will be hogging the 835 for its upcoming Galaxy S8 handset that's expected to debut a few weeks after the G6.

The leaked image also shows that the smartphone will be water and dust resistant, as well as have a rear-facing fingerprint sensor.

Apparently, Samsung will have dibs on the initial production of SD835 for its Galaxy S8 smartphones, thus blocking access for competitors like LG.

Naturally, LG wants to possess the timeframe advantage and we completely respect that, even if it means using a chipset fabricated on the 14nm FinFET architecture. In fact, it would negatively impact on the LG G6, as the smartphone would be coming to market considerably later than the Galaxy S8 and losing any hope of securing early buyers. Therefore, this seems to be a sound decision from the company from a business standpoint. Hopefully, the other features of the smartphone will compensate for the older processor.

In terms of cameras, the LG G6 is expected to retain the same dual-camera setup of it s predecessor.

Sony will introduce its new flagship smartphone ‘Xperia XZ’

According to the News.softpedia, Sony is expected to open this year's Mobile World Congress (MWC) trade fair with a blast.

Rumor has it there will be at least four new Xperia smartphones announced later this month, which will make it to market in the weeks following their unveil.

SONY IS EXPECTED TO INTRODUCE ITS NEW FLAGSHIP SMARTPHONE

Among these devices, Sony is expected to introduce its new flagship smartphone, the successor of the Xperia XZ. There are no details regarding the market name of the device, so to make it less confusing, we will call it Xperia XZ 2.

SEE ALSO:   What to Expect at Biggest Mobile Event? MWC 2017

The pictures published by TechTastic have been taken from Weibo, so we can't vouch for their authenticity, but we do believe Sony will announce a couple of devices at MWC 2017.

THERE ARE A COUPLE OF THINGS THAT WE HAVE NOTICED BY LOOKING AT THESE PICTURES

There are a couple of things that we've noticed by looking at these pictures. The most important seems to be the fact that the Xperia XZ 2 will pack 4GB RAM, which is quite an improvement compared to last year's flagships.

SEE ALSO:   Sony isn't going to unveil its next flagship at MWC 2017

As some of you probably know, all Xperia high-end smartphones include 3GB RAM inside. Not even the Xperia XZ or Xperia Z5 Premium come with 4GB RAM, so this will be a nice change to have.

Another aspect worth mentioning is the addition of the fingerprint scanner integrated into the power button. The power button is located on the side of the smartphone, so it might be harder to reach when it's used with one hand.

SEE ALSO:   Tekken 7 Was Delayed Because The Team Didn't Want to Cut Content, Says Harada

The image doesn't show the positioning of the fingerprint scanner, but the source of the leak claims Sony chose this solution over integrating the sensor on the back side.

Nothing else is known about the Xperia XZ 2, but it won't be long until we learn all the details if Sony decides to make it official at MWC 2017. However, we do know one thing for sure: it will not be powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 835 processor.

Samsung factory that made ‘exploding’ Note 7 batteries catches fire

Samsung Electronics says the Galaxy S smartphone could be delayed as it pledged to enhance product safety.

Samsung factory fire in China. Picture: Weibo

REMEMBER how Samsung had faulty batteries that caused a global recall of the Galaxy Note 7 because smartphones kept exploding?

Well, the company affiliate responsible for manufacturing the faulty batteries has been embarrassed once more, as one of its factories in China burst into flames.

Despite manufacturing batteries at the plant, Samsung SDI claim the fire was "minor" and was caused by a pile of discarded batteries in its waste facility - not those currently on the production line.

Samsung added there was no casualties or significant enough damage to cease the plant's operations.

Despite making it sound minor, the local fire department were required to send 110 firefighters and 19 trucks to put out the fire.

"[The] material that caught fire was lithium batteries inside the production workshops and some half-finished products," the fire department said in a post on its verified Sina Weibo account, reports Reuters.

Regardless of the cause, the incident is a bad look for the Samsung, with the affiliate company supplying the batteries for Samsung's upcoming flagship smartphone Galaxy S8.

Samsung SDI was one of two suppliers that provided batteries for the recalled phones — an issue the tech giant claimed cost it $A6.9 billion in operating profit.

Florida man Nathan Dornacher says a Note 7 charging on the dashboard of his Jeep exploded and set the vehicle ablaze. Picture: FacebookSource:Supplied

Since the incident, the South Korean company invested $A170 million into safety.

Samsung will be hoping this latest setback doesn't lose consumer trust with the upcoming S8 device, as the company is hoping to become the world's biggest smartphone maker once again — Apple overtook the South Korean giant earlier this month.

The S8 is rumoured to include the 3.5mm headphone jack, an edge-to-edge screen and iris scanner.

Thousands of protesters rallied in central Seoul, Saturday, demanding the immediate resignation of President Park Geun-hye. Divided from the protesters by a line police stood several thousand pro-government supporters, who waved the national flag and chanted "invalid impeachment." The President is currently facing impeachment proceedings after being accused of conspiring to extort tens of millions of dollars from South Korean businesses along with her confidante Choi Soon-sil. Park is accused of granting her friend undue influence over her presidential decisions, which allegedly allowed Choi to solicit business donations for her own non-profit fund. The constitutional court has six months to rule on the validity of Park's impeachment. The demonstrators also denounced the court ruling against the arrest of Vice President of Samsung Electronics, Lee Jae-yong, who had faced charges of bribery, embezzlement and perjury in the corruption scandal involving Park. Earlier in the day, Sout h Korean Culture Minister Cho Yoon-sun was detained on suspicion of involvement in compiling a blacklist of artists, who were deemed critical of Park. Cho is reportedly the first South Korean acting minister to be arrested.

New Android Wear 2.0 Flagship Watches Allows NFC Transactions Via Android Pay

    An Android phone/Wikimedia Commons

    Thursday, February 9, 2017 12:42 AM UTC

On February 8, the first flagship Android Wear 2.0 watches have been unveiled, along with several standout features already been reported earlier. These features include improved watch faces, iOS support, new ways to respond to messages, a built-in Google Assistant, and Android Pay.

WIRED said last week, leaked shots have already introduced the possibility of Android Pay retrofitted in the smartwatches. NFC payments via Android Pay are similar to how payments are being done via Apple Pay on Apple Watch: simply have their wearable (with an NFC chip built in) touch a contactless reader to pay off goods or services from one of Android Pay's partner retailers. Wearers will be shown of the transaction was successful when a big green tick is shown on the smartwatch interface, according to the screenshots obtained by TechRadar. Then, the interface will show a list of previous purchases, which would be a convenience for people who do not wish to separately access these information on their smartphone or tablet.

"Google's wrist OS is improving at a steady pace, but still isn't the right fit for everyone. Aside from the weak app selection, it holds its own against the Apple Watch, but could surpass it in the future," James Peckham wrote in a review.

As for the smartwatches that will have this ability, fans can avail the LG Watch Sport and LG Watch Style, EndGadget reported. As soon as the Android Wear 2.0 roll out in other smartwatches, the LG Watch Urbane, Asus ZenWatch, and Sony Smartwatch 3 might be Android Pay-compatible, as all three feature NFC, TechRadar noted.
