OnePlus 3 Has An Ally In Killing Flagships In The Form Of The Asus Zenfone 3

Asus is launching the Zenfone 3 series of Android phones in India, that can give even the most powerful flagships a run for their money. The company is holding a media event for the same on August 17 in India.

For the first time, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 processor is going to be used to power a smartphone. The Snapdragon 821 is the successor to the flagship Snapdragon 820. It delivers a 10 per cent performance boost over the 820, with speeds that reaches up to 2.4GHz. The 821 SoC can handle all the latest in tech including virtual reality.

When pitched against the OnePlus 3, the Zenfone 3 almost matches up to it. Zenfone 3 comes loaded with the world's most powerful processor clocked at a massive 2.4Ghz, that is significantly faster and better than the OnePlus 3 running Snapdragon 820 at 2.2Ghz.

Also, it seems 6GB RAM is the new bar being set by the flagships. The OnePlus 3 came out with 6GB of R AM, and now Asus has matched it with the Zenfone 3.

The Zenfone 3 sports a really sharp Super-AMOLED Full HD display with Asus's proprietary Tru2Life technology that provides a vibrant color reproduction, matching the very capable display of the One Plus 3. The display comes protected by Gorilla Glass 4, and has an always-on mode, so you can quickly peek into your notifications without having to unlock the phone. The Super AMOLED display is a lifesaver with the way it only lights up part of the screen when a notification arrives, saving a lot of battery.

But the best part about all Zenfone smartphones has been the efforts ASUS puts into the cameras. This time too, the company doesn't disappoint. On paper, the 23-megapixel rear camera with a Sony IMX 318 camera processor and f/2.0 aperture may beat even the iPhone 6S at its game. But then, mere numbers doesn't really add up to good quality always. The phone comes installed with a trifecta of auto-focus technology, that ca n focus in on a subject in a mere 0.03s. Again, take that with a pinch of salt, because low-light conditions may not be able to reproduce the result. The camera also comes with optical and digital image stabilization, as well.

Asus has introduced a new feature called Deep Trench Isolation, that prevents light from leaking from one pixel on the sensor to another, along with a color-correction sensor that will automatically the balance the color of an unusually-lit object.

Asus also joins the elite rank of smartphones that are coming out with the powerful and efficient USB-Type C port, including the newly launched Samsung Galaxy Note 7 and the OnePlus 3.

The Zenfone 3's battery however that's just at par with the specs. The 3,000mAh battery isn't bad but not too great either. But considering how the OnePlus 3 also sports a 3,000mAh battery, it seems both the manufacturers live in an illusion that the phones have juice inside.

The Asus Zenfone 3 runs on Android 6.0 with the ZenUI 3.0. This is where Asus really scores. It's UI is just fantastic to use, and comes with the option of uninstalling the unnecessary bloatware.

The Zenfone 3 comes with a 64GB of onboard storage with the option of expanding it up to 256GB via a microSD card.

All in all, the Zenfone 3 will join the ranks of OnePlus 3, at killing flagships like the Galaxy Note 7 that incidentally comes with only 4GB of RAM.
