Cat S60 unveiled as ‘most waterproof smartphone’, first to integrate thermal camera

In recent months, even years, it started to feel like all rugged gadgets were the same, kind of how most mainstream flagship Android phones share their super-high-end specifications. But the Cat S60 is so much more than just another overly bulky, muscular and mediocre in terms of performance handheld.

This 4.7-inch bad boy brings "true innovation" to the table, in the form of an embedded thermal camera from FLIR, the global leader in thermal imaging technology. The heat-detecting cam can literally save lives, allowing the S60's owner to see in complete darkness, as well as through thick smoke.

Needless to point out such an ingenious new feature might help emergency first responders quickly spot life in a burning building, plus uncover heat loss around windows and doors, and identify malfunctioning electrical appliances and circuitry.

Clearly, we're not looking at an entertainment-focused device here, though you should be able to spice up your visits to the beach and scuba diving holidays with an underwater dual flash 13MP main photographic unit.

Forget protection against the occasional splash and rain drop, as the Cat S60 is "the world's most waterproof smartphone", with resistance up to a full hour and 5 meter depths. And speaking of drops, it also "exceeds" military spec, withstanding plunges on hard concrete from heights of 1.8 meters.

In a nutshell, the phone's essentially unbreakable, 4G LTE-enabled, octa-core Snapdragon 617-powered, "optimized for battery performance" (3,800 mAh), and further equipped with 3GB RAM and 32GB internal storage space. Oh, and it even runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow out the box. Which may not feel like such an amazing feat when the Cat S60 is barely supposed to launch commercially in May, at an RRP of €649/$599.

First things first, don't forget to check back next week for a hands-on demo of the thermal-rigged gadget in action from MWC 2016.
