Apple iPhone 7 to Have a Thinner But Slightly Bigger Battery than the iPhone 6S

The rumors and leaks about the Apple iPhone 7 continue to spread on the internet and among the latest to have come out is the reportedly thinner but slightly bigger battery of the handset.

After Samsung and HTC focused on improving the batteries of their flagship smartphones this year, with the HTC 10 reportedly lasting full two days amid heavy usage, Apple needed to do something about it as well with its upcoming iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus.

However, it seems that the American tech giant could not go the proverbial whole nine yards with its iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus because of battery size constraints.

Apparently, in order to accommodate the bigger battery on its iPhone 7, Apple needs to make it thinner to make it fit into its overall chassis, where the American tech giant appears to be experiencing a great challenge in the ongoing development.

Reports have it that the iPhone 7 shall have a 1,735 mAh battery, which is a mere 20 mAh improvement over the iPhone 6S' 1,715 mAh battery power.

The larger iPhone 7 Plus meanwhile, shall have a 2,810 mAh battery, which is a major improvement over the iPhone 6S Plus' 2,750 mAh, accounting for a 310 mAh improvement in its power source, details BGR.

Deviating from the usual development cycle

Over the past couple of years, Apple has been updating its iPhones through a predictable market cycle. The American tech giant usually ushers major design changes in even-numbered years and it is usually followed by under-the-hood improvements that keep the same physical chassis in odd-numbered S phone years, cites C/Net.

However, if the rumors about the design of the upcoming iPhone 7 are true, then Apple may likely deviate from its iPhone development tradition and come up with a dramatic innovation when it releases its next iPhones this coming September.

The most important dynamic innovations expected on the iPhone 7 and its companion phone is the pressure-sensitive 3D touchscreen and the increasing always-on hands-free functionality of Siri.

There are also reports saying that the iPhone 7 shall also come out buttonless, which would be a natural move for the company that has a strong preference for clean lines as well as simple design.

A sapphire display?

Some reports are also alluding that the iPhone 7 might feature a durable sapphire display, which would offer a higher degree of scratch and shatter-resistance than the current model's Gorilla Glass.

The Apple Watch already features sapphire display when it came out in March last year which perfectly blends with the OLED technology that provides best-in-class black levels, contrast, and colors on a growing assortment of smartphones including the Samsung Galaxy S7.

Apple may actually decide to use the technology and the sapphire display on its iPhone 7 lest it is left behind by its close competitors in the smartphone market.

According to Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI Securities, a reputable Apple analyst, the American tech giant may revamp its lineup of iPhones next year to include a new curved display.

The new iPhone screen reportedly will be based on the active matrix organic light-emitting diode or AMOLED screens currently used in the iPhones. OLED displays, on the other hand, are thinner, and more flexible than LCDs. They are also more power-efficient, which lasts a lot longer even from a single battery charge.

There have been reports early this year saying that Apple may switch to OLED displays by 2018, which means it would still not happen on the upcoming iPhone 7.

There are actually three major rumors about the next flagship smartphone of Apple. The first one is that it would be extremely thin. The second one is that it shall have a dual lens camera. And the third is that it is going to have a bigger battery.

The first and third rumors seem to contradict itself as making the iPhone thinner would mean that the battery has to be shrunk as well to fit the overall unibody. But according to speculations, Apple would make the battery bigger in different ways.

Samsung pips Apple as leader in India's premium smartphone segment

"Compared to the Galaxy S6 series performance previous year, the S7 series is showing as much as 50% higher sales during its opening month of sales in some markets", Counterpoint said in an April 7 report.

Samsung Electronics delivered strong results for the first quarter of 2016, thanks to sales of the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge, its flagship smartphones. Both the revenue and operating profit hovered above analysts' estimates of 49.14 trillion won and 5.62 trillion won, compiled earlier by stock information provider FnGuide.

The firm said in a separate filing it will buy back KRW 2 trillion of its own shares in the third instalment of its KRW 11.3 trillion buyback plan.

Industry data suggests Samsung's overall smartphone sales actually fell 1% year-on-year but this compared to a 16% decline for Apple. The South Korean tech titan settled a one-time royalty in the quarter, but it was only less than a percent of the IM revenue, the company said via a press release on April 28, Thursday.

Samsung released its Galaxy S7 early and saw a bump in first-quarter profits but what's next in the mobile market remains unanswered.

It comes after rival Apple reported the first ever year-on-year decline in sales of its iPhone handsets.

Apart from its 5.1 inch Quad HD Super AMOLED display, Galaxy S7 packs the same impressive features as its dual edge sibling, the Galaxy S7 edge, which offers a 5.5-inch display. Despite the drop, the company should be proud since Q1 featured as the first burst sale for Galaxy S7 and S7 edge handsets.

Samsung Electronics has credited a 5.7 per cent increase in first quarter revenues to successful early sales of its new flagship smartphone range, the Galaxy S7.

The Semiconductor business fared relatively well with an operating profit of 2.63 trillion won amid a market recession, maintaining solid earnings by improving the high-value added memory product mix such as V-NAND SSD for servers, and by expanding the supply of System LSI components for premium smartphones. The news was finally good for the beleaguered smartphone, consumer appliance, display and semiconductor company, especially after a run of tough financial quarters over the past year as it fought stiff competition from Apple's iPhones and others.

Apple Inc. May Be Losing Smartphone Share to Samsung

Ip

Describing Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) most recent quarterly financial results as "disappointing" might just be an understatement -- they were downright ugly. Apple reported a sharp decline in iPhone unit shipments in its most recent quarter and, as a result of weak demand and a commensurate channel inventory adjustment, iPhone units are expected to drop significantly again in the current quarter.

Although CEO Tim Cook blamed the iPhone declines on a weaker-than-hoped upgrade cycle relative to that seen following the iPhone 6/6 Plus launch as well as broader macroeconomic weakness. Cook pointed to high customer loyalty and record levels of Android switchers to iPhone as positives that bode well for the company's iPhone business over the long term.

That being said, I can't help but note that Apple may be losing share to Samsung. Allow me to explain.

Look at the year-over-year comparisons Apple reported a drop in iPhone sales from around 61 million to around 51 million in the most recent quarter, a reduction of approximately 16%. In contrast, Samsung (NASDAQOTH:SSNLF) reported that sales in its "Mobile" group (smartphones, tablets, etc.) were actually up 8% year-over-year in its most recent quarter.

For all of 2016, Samsung aims to see a year-over-year increase in the profitability of its mobile division "through high-end sales growth and solid profitability of mid to low-end products."

Apple, in contrast, will have seen iPhone sales flat in fiscal Q1, iPhone down in fiscal Q2 and fiscal Q3, with its fiscal Q4 something of an unknown at this point, though analyst consensus calls for a 9.1% year-over-year drop in total revenue, implying further iPhone unit declines.

It's clear that Samsung is seeing better year-over-year growth than Apple is.

Is it share gain against Apple, or ...? One potential explanation is that Samsung is simply regaining share in the premium tier of the smartphone market, which Apple dominates, from Apple. In fact, given that the Galaxy S7 seems to have been fairly well received and is superior to the current iPhone 6s flagship in a number of key ways (display quality, camera, and weight), this wouldn't be too surprising.

However, it's important to note that Apple isn't the only player in the premium tier of the smartphone market (though it is the largest). Samsung may very well be gaining share against other vendors of Android-based smartphones (i.e. HTC, LG, and so on), which could explain the South Korean consumer electronics giant's year-over-year growth in mobile.

Apple is probably losing share; iPhone 7 needs to be a hit Although I doubt that Apple would ever admit it, it seems likely that part of the iDevice maker's iPhone woes is due to share loss in the premium tier of the market to the likes of Samsung, Huawei, and others.

Fortunately, I think that with a strong iPhone 7 showing later this year, Apple has an opportunity to grow its share in the premium portion of the smartphone market. Apple will need to make sure that the iPhone 7 is sufficiently advanced/compelling, though, to stay relevant once the Android vendors launch their flagships in the middle of the iPhone 7 cycle.

Smartphone demand falls for the first time ever

The shipments of smartphones worldwide in the first quarter marked the smallest year-on-year growth on record, and Chinese smartphone makers Oppo Electronics Corp and Vivo Mobile Communication Technology Co Ltd pushed out previous fourth and fifth place players Lenovo Group Ltd and Xiaomi Corp, a report said.

Huawei, which shipped 27.5 million smartphones in the quarter, saw its marketshare surge by almost 60% year-over-year to 8.2%, thanks to continued domestic dominance, combined with a growing presence outside of China. However, there are signs that Huawei's growth in the high end segment is now starting to slow, as several major rivals like OPPO and Vivo are fighting back. 3 percent. Conversely, number three vendor Huawei made significant market share gains, rising from five percent market share in the first quarter 2015 to 8.5 percent in the same quarter this year. Samsung remained the world's biggest smartphone vendor, with sal es of its new flagship Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge smartphones helping it to ship 79 million units in the quarter.

That brought its share down slightly to 23.6% from 24% a year earlier.

One company that defied the downward trend is China's Huawei, which saw shipments rise 64 percent from 17.3 million in Q1 2015 to 28.3 million in Q1 2016.

Anti-Trump protesters clash with policeSeveral hundred delegates and paid attendees waited in a long security line, along with dozens of reporters, to hear Trump speak. Trump walks along a jersey wall after his motorcade took a detour when the large crowd of protesters gathered outside the hotel.

Apple fell 16 percent annually and shipped a disappointing 51.2 million smartphones worldwide in Q1 2016.

BlackBerry's woes continue, with an estimated 53% decline in units shipped, despite a pivot to Android with the Priv. Unless sales pick up in 2016, as more Android devices are released, Juniper anticipates that BlackBerry will exit the smartphone market in the near future. Apple cited slowing iPhone sales among the factors for its first revenue drop since 2003, and Strategy Analytics believes other vendors have, or will soon, feel the pinch as the global market tightens. Maturity and saturation in larger markets like the USA and China is also having an impact on shipment figures.

Global smart watch shipments grew at a phenomenal pace in 1Q16, Strategy Analytics said. "The average is about four years". "All this being said, consumers are bound to have more choice in connecting their cellular-enabled tablets in the next 12-18 months and the carr iers that are the most prepared will reap the rewards".

Almost all smartphone brands faced varying degrees of decline with the exception of Samsung and Huawei, who have seen mild and moderate growth respectively.
